Kim Sang-keun (born 20 June 1986 in Seoul) is a South Korean picture book author. His best-known works include Little Mole’s Worries, Little Mole’s Wish, Little Mole’s Summer, Star Fishing, What’s in Your Bag? and What’s in the Cave? Kim was selected as a BIB candidate in 2019 with Little Mole’s Wish.

Life[edit]

Kim Sang-keun is a South Korean picture book author born in Seoul in 1986. He liked to draw and to tell stories from a young age, and majored in another of his interests, animation, at Konkuk University. He breathes life into his picture book characters and conveys their emotions based on his past experience of creating animation. He has been active as a picture book artist ever since the publication of Little Mole’s Worries in 2015. Kim lives in Seoul with his wife.

Career[edit]

Kim’s picture books showcase a beautiful, fantastical world and sensitive characters, evident in works such as Little Mole’s Worries, Little Mole’s Wish, and Star Fishing. His Little Mole series has been particularly well received for its universal theme and pure-hearted, lovable characters, and has been published in more than ten countries worldwide following its introduction at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.

Style[edit]

Kim Sang-keun begins work on a picture book only after laying out the color scheme and composing the scenes in detail. He mainly uses colored pencils, pastels, and pens for drawing, digitally^{[disambiguation needed]} processing the images in tandem. Kim’s books usually feature animals that act like humans, and who serve as vehicles for his message. The animal that appears most often in his work is the mole. Kim says he finds moles appealing because their appearance, habits, and characteristics very often call to mind human beings living in our modern society. Kim Sang-keun’s picture books hold messages for children and adults alike. Kim has said that he is consoled by picture books, and discovers clues in them that help him navigate the difficulties in life. Also, children need experience, not teaching, and recognition of their own lives. In particular, Little Mole’s Wish is the author’s way of conveying his hope that adults will wholeheartedly support and encourage the innocent and imaginative world of children.
