Sofie Thérèse Verbruggen (May 8, 1956, Antwerp, Belgium)[1] is a Belgian singer. She is best known by her stage name (and also given name) Sofie.

Biography[edit]

Sofie was discovered in 1973 in the Discover the Star contest. In 1975 she joined Fred Beekman and Bob Baelemans' disco formation Trinity to sing until this group broke up in 1978. A success from that time was the single 002,345,709 (That's my number). In 1982, she scored a modest hit with I Love You. In Asia, on the other hand, it became a hit with millions of hits on YouTube.

In 1983, she participated in the Belgian preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Number One. She eventually had to lose out to Pas de Deux. In 1987, she again took part in the Belgian preselections for the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Door jou but stranded in sixth place.

In 1989, Verbruggen released the jazz album When Morning Comes with pianist and good friend Jack van Poll and guitarist Philip Catherine, among others. She also had a role in the 1999 musical Jesus Christ Superstar. On the album Love Loops (CNR), she sang a duet with Bobby Womack. From 1996 to 2012, Sofie was a voice teacher at the Conservatory of Ghent. In 2007, she released an album with classical orchestra: Songs in the Key of Love conducted by Dirk Brossé. It includes a duet with Mike & The Mechanics singer Paul Carrack. In 2014 she released the album Ella to Bacharach (HKM) including a duet with Toots Thielemans.

In the fall of 2018, she will join JackoBond, Sandrine and Maggie MacNeal for a tribute tour to Ann Christy with Because the Rose Survives.

In early 2019, she received a "Vedet," a career award, from S-Plus.
