Kingdom Studios, LLC[1] is a production company in partnership with Lionsgate specializing in the production of Christian films. It was founded in 2018 by Jon and Andrew Erwin, Kevin Downes, and Tony Young.[2]
History
The founding of Kingdom Studios was made possible because of the success of the Erwins' film I Can Only Imagine, which was released in early 2018 by Lionsgate, grossing more than $83 million at the domestic box office on a $7 million budget.[3]
Subsequent negotiations with Lionsgate culminated in a multi-year deal in which it was agreed that the Erwin Brothers and Kevin Downes would create faith-based feature films and television programming for the company.[4][5][6] Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chairman, Joe Drake, and Television Group Chairman, Kevin Beggs announced the agreement on August 9, 2018.[5]
Kingdom Studios was announced to have been launched on March 26, 2019 at the National Religious Broadcasters convention in Anaheim, California.[3][7][8]
I Still Believe, Kingdom's first film project, began filming in the spring of 2019 and is set to be released on March 20, 2020.[9][10][11]
About
Jon Erwin related that he and the other founders had wanted to find a way for Christian filmmakers to come together under a single banner, and that Kingdom came about as a result of that:[12][8]
[w]e started asking, "What can we do together that none of us can do alone? Is there a way, instead of being soloists, that we can become a symphony?"[13]
He further expressed the founders' hopes for Kingdom Studios, stating that
[o]ur dream for launching Kingdom is to create the most trusted and respected brand in faith-based entertainment.[4][5]
Erwin also stated that another vision of Kingdom's is to recognize and foster filmmaking talent.[8] He compared Kingdom to a Christian version of Pixar or Marvel Studios, in that the studio would be dedicated to a single genre of film and be able to work on multiple productions at once.[14]
Kingdom's main goal, according to Erwin, is to spread the Gospel using film as a medium.[3][8]
Operations and creative team
The production studio has operations in both Nashville, Tennessee and Los Angeles, California.[11][15] Jon Erwin serves as CEO of Kingdom, and Andrew Erwin is Chief Creative Officer, while Kevin Downes is Chief of Production and Distribution and Tony Young holds the position of Chairman.[8]
Films
Kingdom Studios intends to produce two faith-based films per year,[7][8] and has to date revealed four productions, each one slated for a prospective 2020 or 2021 wide release by Lionsgate.[16][8] Each of the films were unveiled at the National Religious Broadcasters convention at Anaheim, California in March 2019.[8][11]
I Still Believe is a biographical film on the life of Christian music artist Jeremy Camp during his first wife's struggle with cancer, and will be Kingdom's first film to be theatrically released. The other films announced are Apostles: Resurrection of Christ, which is to be the first in a trilogy based on the New Testament, Jesus Revolution, which is based on the events of the Jesus Movement, and The Drummer Boy, which will be produced in cooperation with Christian music group For King and Country.[2][7][8][11]
