The Kinjaz (stylized as KINJAZ) are an American hip-hop dance crew. Established in 2010 in Los Angeles, California when dancers Mike Song and Anthony Lee formed a group that danced to Naruto music, called ANBU Black Ops, Kinjaz has evolved into one of the most popular dance brands in the world, acquiring major sponsorships from conglomerates ranging from Adidas to McDonald's.[1], to building out their chain of dance studios in Los Angeles, Beijing, and Chengdu[2][3].
In 2015, the TV show America's Best Dance Crew played a major role in introducing the relatively niche Kinjaz crew to larger audiences. Groups like Jabbawockeez and the Kinjaz – winners and runner-up of Seasons 1 and 8 of ABDC, respectively – became household names, known for their precise movements and stunning performances. Not only did Kinjaz continue to perform worldwide after ABDC, they also created opportunities for others to discover and learn dance as well. The Kinjaz founded its first 'Dojo' style dance studio in Monterey Park in 2016, and has since moved into their second, more modern, 'Kinjaz Komplex' location in Downtown Los Angeles.[4].
The Kinjaz received their official Youtube award for Passing 1,000,000 subscribers on June 22, 2020.[5].
History[edit]
Early career[edit]
Originally a member of Kaba Modern, Mike Song founded Kinjaz in 2010 along with Anthony Lee to compete in VIBE XV, a Hip Hop Dance Competition sponsored by Kallusive. At the time, their crew was named 'Anbu Black Ops' in honor of the Naruto lore that their choreography was based upon. Anthony Lee reveals that although they initially planned to perform only once, the crew received a standing ovation, numerous collaboration requests after their performance, and over 100,000 views on the video, prompting them to keep the crew together and keep pushing forward[6][7]. Less than a month later, the Kinjaz were spotted again performing at Kollaboration at the Shrine Auditorium[7]
America's Best Dance Crew[edit]
The eighth season of America's Best Dance Crew features six dance crews, including five previous winners. The past champions are joined by one new dance crew, which includes members from Season 1 winner JabbaWockeeZ and fellow competitors Kaba Modern.
