The Kiwanis Club of Sebastopol held its inaugural meeting on March 3, 1971, in the second-floor hall of the Odd Fellows building at 195 North Main Street in downtown Sebastopol. Over the following decades the club met at a series of downtown locations, including 250 South Main Street (now the site of El Favorito Burrito), 135 South Main Street (now The Livery), 1015 Gravenstein Highway South (now El Coronel), and 2295 Gravenstein Highway South (La Bodega Kitchen), before settling in its current permanent home at the Sebastopol Community Cultural Center, 390 Morris Street.

Throughout its 54 years of volunteer service projects, the Kiwanis Club of Sebastopol has contributed significantly to local recreational infrastructure, including the rebuilding and maintenance of tennis courts at Analy High School and Brookhaven Elementary School, as well as those at Ragle Ranch Regional Park (500 Ragle Road). The club also constructed the park's first sand volleyball court, enhancing family and youth activities in the 157-acre regional park. In the 1990s, at Willard Libby Park (7985 Valentine Avenue), club volunteers built a bocce court, picnic area, and pergola, while partnering with other local service clubs, including Rotary, to construct the original "Super Playground"—a community-built play structure later refurbished and eventually replaced with a modern design.

In the early 2000s, amid financial challenges that threatened its viability, the Kiwanis Club of Sebastopol provided a critical grant to the Sebastopol Area Senior Center, helping sustain its operations and keep its doors open for local seniors seeking social, educational, and recreational programs. Longtime club member Phil Aron played a pivotal role in these efforts, serving as contract manager for the center's major reconstruction in 2003 and earning the honorary title of "Godfather of the Senior Center" in 2017 for his decades of advocacy and support. The center, Sonoma County's oldest nonprofit senior hub founded in 1969, continues to thrive today—growing by about 20% annually and even seeking a larger facility in 2025 due to overwhelming demand—without any reports of closure.

Activities

Each year, the club produces the 3rd of July Fireworks & Music Extravaganza, an Independence Day celebration founded in 1975 by local optometrist and club member Dr. L. Barry Lutz (1941–2025). This event has become the club's primary fundraiser through ticket sales. The event reached its 50th year in 2025.

The club also organizes the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Ives Park, a free community tradition that began in 1981. The event features timed hunts divided by age groups (typically toddlers through age 10 or older), where children search for hundreds of real and plastic eggs filled with candy, toys, and occasional gift certificates, accompanied by music such as the William Tell Overture and photos with the Easter Bunny. It regularly draws 200–500 participants and is a multi-generational family event.

In 2024, Kiwanis Club members Lawrence Jaffee (2023 Sebastopol Citizen of the Year) and Craig Litwin launched the inaugural Halloween Fest at Ives Park, a free, family-oriented event inviting schools, community organizations, and residents to gather for safe trick-or-treating and festivities. Held annually on October 31 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., it encourages groups to set up complimentary tents for candy distribution and networking in a wheelchair-accessible, toddler-friendly atmosphere where parents can relax amid park decorations featuring illuminated botanical sculptures from Astro Botanicals. The event proved an instant success, drawing hundreds of families, and returned in 2025 to continued acclaim as a community unifier.
