Elson Haas is an American physician and a pioneer of Integrative Medicine,[1] a philosophy of treatment that combines alternative medicine practices with evidence-based medicine. He is a passionate advocate of nutritional medicine, juice cleansing, and other methods of detoxification, and incorporates these treatments into his daily medical practice.[2]

Early life[edit]

Elson Haas was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan in a family-oriented neighborhood. He is the middle child to an older brother and younger sister. As a child, Elson played baseball, football, tennis, and swam often in Michigan's lakes. His mother Shirley was a homemaker and his father Martin bought a grocery store during his high school days, where the family worked and Elson learned much about business and service. His father went on to maintain several businesses.

Elson Haas attended MacDowell Elementary, Mumford High School, and the University of Michigan for three years of undergrad, but after his junior year he was solicited for UM's new, fast-track program and jumped to their medical school.

Education and Career[edit]

Elson Haas received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1972 before completing his internship at Highland Hospital in Oakland, CA. He studied many healing modalities to develop his unique blend of medicine before founding the Preventive Medical Center of Marin (PMCM)[3] in 1984 in San Rafael, CA, which remains an active Bay Area practice.[4]

He has authored ten books on health and nutrition[5] such as Staying Healthy with the Seasons, Staying Healthy with Nutrition, The New Detox Diet, The False Fat Diet, and Vitamins for Dummies and, recently, Ultimate Immunity (Rodale Publishing, 2015). He has given numerous lectures, media interviews, and television appearances about nutrition since 1981,[6] and has taught medical aspects of detoxification for more than four decades.

Elson Haas focuses especially on the health needs of children, encouraging early habits of healthy eating and positive parental care that have long-lasting results throughout their lives, in collaboration with his long-time associate Bethany Argisle. He promotes these principles through Seasons Studios, an education product development company, which has produced children's books such as Anatomix Comix, Count Broccula, and Blimps and Whales.

Personal life[edit]

Elson Haas has resided in northern California since 1972. He has two children, Orion (born in 1985) and Ishara (born in 1989) with his previous wife, Tara West. He has a very integrated life/work balance between seeing patients, running a medical clinic, writing, and teaching though the media. He loves to exercise and enjoys a variety of activities.
