Kobe (pseudonym of Jacques Saelens, (Kortrijk, Belgium, 4 September 1950 – Saint-Julien (Var), France, 26 oktober 2014) was a Belgian sculptor. He created his own style of sculptures that are instantly recognizable. Two themes dominated his creations: the female form in all its simplicity and mystery, and the horse as a symbol of strength, companionship, and connection.

Fascinated by the ancient cultures in Central and South America, Africa and Asia, Kobe travelled around the world to develop his artistic vision. Each one of his creations is therefore preceded by a long journey of study, passion, and awareness. His sculptures have a unique form that combine broadness with sophistication.

Kobe did not overcomplicate or inject his art with hidden meanings. Instead he was in constant search of simplicity, purity, and beauty. Through his works of art Kobe brought feelings to life for the world to enjoy: happiness, affection, love, and friendship.

Oeuvre[edit]

Kobe's most monumental artwork ‘Arcade’ is located in Canada, near the Atlantic Ocean. Some of his other sculptures can be found in museums and private collections, among which are The Phoebus Foundation, Beeldengalerij Het Depot, and Kinepolis.

Legacy[edit]

Kobe unexpectedly passed away in 2014. He devoted his life to making art and left an impressive oeuvre of marble and bronze sculptures. His son (Albin Saelens) has taken it upon himself since February 2016 (with Foundation Kobe) to honour his father's legacy and keep the appreciation for his art alive. Albin travels around the world to meet people who are equally moved by the art of Kobe. Albin continues to promote Kobe's artworks through the following activities:

• Organizing exhibitions (in collaboration with art galleries at home and abroad).

• Promoting the oeuvre (art galleries, art fairs, museums,... at home and abroad)

• Assessing the authenticity of the artworks (individuals, auction houses, art dealers, museums and other institutions are more than welcome to inquire about the authenticity of a sculpture)

• Realizing publications ("Kobe - Ingenious Simplicity" - 2016 - 252p. - NL/FR/EN)
