Kolej Universiti Poly-Tech MARA (KUPTM) is a private university college located in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is managed by Kolej Poly-Tech MARA Sdn. Bhd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA).

History[edit]

The main KUPTM Campus

KUPTM is located in Taman Shamelin Perkasa, Cheras. It was established in 1987 as one of the branches of Kolej Yayasan Pelajaran MARA (MARA Education Foundation College). Together with three other branches (in Kuantan, Bangi, and Kota Bharu), it was later established as a private higher educational institution under the name Kolej Poly-Tech MARA (KPTM) in September 2003 as per the 1996 Private Higher Educational Institutions Act (Act 555).[4] In October 2015, it was upgraded to a full university college (kolej universiti) status. KUPTM is expected to receive full university status by October 2020.[5]

Campus[edit]

The 'Amazing KUPTM' mural

The KUPTM campus covers an area of almost 2 hectares. The six-floor building consists of lecture rooms, classrooms, computer laboratories, language laboratories, and various other facilities.

Various major scientific research facilities are located on or adjacent to the campus.

Organisation and governance[edit]

Faculties[edit]

KUPTM is divided into 3 faculties and 2 institutes. These incorporate the university's major departments of teaching and research centres.[6]

The faculties and institutes are:

  • Faculty of Computing and Multimedia (FCOM)
  • Faculty of Business, Accountancy and Social Science (FBASS)
  • Faculty of Education, Humanity and Arts (FEHA)
  • Institue of Professional Studies (IPS)
  • Institue of Graduate Studies (IGS)

Various other academic organisations exist alongside the faculties and research centres.

Vice-chancellors and chancellors[edit]

The vice-chancellor is the chief executive of the university, who is head of KUPTM's day-to-day activities. The vice-chancellor is also the university president. In North America and parts of Europe, the equivalent role is the president or principal. The current vice-chancellor and president is Prof. Dr. Darulihsan bin Abd Hamid. He was named as the vice-chancellor and president on March 2019.

The Rare Books Collection consists of over 100 items, valued because of their age, uniqueness or physical beauty, which can be accessed by KUPTM staff and students.

Student life[edit]

In 2019 KUPTM had over 5,000 students across its campus. Of these, around 3,000 are undergraduate students, 1,500 are graduate or postgraduate and 500 are undertaking higher degrees by research.

Student organisations[edit]

KUPTM students are represented by student unions in individual campus organisations and by the university-wide.

  • Students Representative Council

Students are also represented by academic associations and societies. These groups organise social events and represent student interests to the faculty among other goals.

Sport at KUPTM is overseen by some people. Currently, there are over 10 sporting clubs at the university.

The main sport facility at KUPTM is the futsal court.

Every new student (with the exception of those who already live near the campus) is required to stay at one of the hostels for the first semester. After that, they are allowed to either stay in the hostel or live off-campus. The Student Accommodation Unit (SAU) is responsible in managing the hostel, as well as helping those who are searching for rented houses around the area.[7]

There are currently three hostels under the supervision of SAU:

  • Desa Siswi Hostel, Pudu Ulu
  • Bayu Apartment, Pandan Jaya
  • Sri Pandan Condominium, Pandan Mewah
