Music career[edit]

Career Beginnings[edit]

Kongo was born in Atlanta, Georgia on Oct 9, 1990. Shortly after his birth, his mother and him moved to Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands where he later started gaining interest in the local music scene. His music inspirations are Kanye West, Timbaland, Dr.Dre, Rock City (duo), Zaytoven and Rick Rubin. He went to school daily and would rush home to create beats on his friend's rhythm box machine. His first love was playing baseball; Kongo has traveled the world with his local baseball teams to participate in the sport. After reaching middle school, he knew he wanted to be a Record Producer. In 2003, Kongo and his mother relocated back to Atlanta, Georgia, where he quickly started to network with rappers such as Travis Porter, with whom he produced songs including the classic song "Fu*ked in the Car" which was featured as #31 on they're "Travis Porter - Top 100 Songs.[2]

As he continued high school in Atlanta, he would skip school and run home to make beats. He would call his friends over to record and make beats charging only $50. The word quickly spread that there was this young kid named "Kongo" that had hot beats and studio time for cheap. His clientel quickly grew over time, and the local community took notice.[3]

Present[edit]

Kongo released his first instrumental mixtape Beatz By Tha Pound in 2011[4] which lead to many artists recording songs over the beats. In 2012, he met Doe Boy, who is signed with Future's Freebandz record label.[5] Doe Boy and Kongo went on to record numerous songs until Doe Boy was incarcerated.[6] Kongo was also featured on Doe Boy's, Lex Luger & Young Chop - Boyz N Da Hood 2 Mixtape.[7]

In 2012, he went on to produce the Future ft 2 Chainz & Waka Flocka Flame song - Mind Blown,[8] He also produced Future's song "Big Bankroll" ft Jim Jones and Yo Gotti.[9][10] Both of the songs were featured on Wired 25: The 25 Greatest Future Hooks of All Time[11]

Production style and inspiration[edit]

Kongo has a very different style and approach when it comes to production. His melodies are caribbean infused with Trap and Rnb. Kongo can use any software and produce beats but he prefers Fl Studio and Pro Tools

Kongo finds inspiration in listening to underground artists, low budget films, and netflix. He liked to listen to old samples from the 1950s and find hidden melodies in them and flip them. He also finds inspiration in traveling and meeting new artists.
