Born and raised in Kolkata, Korok has a Santhali parentage. His father (Christopher Murmu) was from a small tribal village in Jharkhand and his mother (Nabalata Murmu) is from Bankura. Korok and his elder brother Rangin had a modest upbringing. Korok showed a creative streak from a very early age. He is a voracious reader and would read anything he could lay his hands on. Be it classic Bengali novels, which his mother would provide him, or comics, which he loaned from friends. He studied in Vivekananda Mission School, Kolkata, and was an average student. But he showed promising signs in the arts and crafts classes. At the age of 16, Korok understood that his calling lay in the creative world. But he still was not sure how to pursue his dreams. Later when he studied Mass Communications and Videography in St. Xaviers College, Kolkata, he realized he wanted to make films.

After completing his graduation from St. Xaviers College, Kolkata, he sat for the exams and was accepted in the prestigious Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute,Kolkata. He studied Direction and Screenplay writing in the institute. But instead of attending classes he was more interested in watching films in the Institute’s huge film library. He used to go there when the library opened and watched films till the library closed. Later on Korok realized that watching films taught him more than attending classes. Till this day Korok has made it his habit of watching at least one film in his free days.

Career[edit]

Early works and first directorial debut (2011-2017)[edit]

After completing his Post Graduate Diploma in Direction and Screenplay writing from Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Korok started working as an assistant editor for Bengali TV serials. Then he switched to direction, working as an Assistant Director in TV serials for channels like Zee Bangla, Star Jalsa, Etv Bangla. Very quickly he rose from the position of 2nd Assistant Director to Chief Assistant Director and was encouraged by his directors to shoot scenes.

Breakthrough (2018-2019)[edit]

Korok’s first major break came when he was appointed as the Episode Director for Mahanayak TV series on Star Jalsa. This was his first experience working with superstars like Prasenjit Chatterjee, Paoli Dam, Tanusree Chakraborty, Priyanka Sarkar and others. Immediately after Mahanayak, Korok directed his first web series, B.C.Baal[4] for Addatimes. This was at a time when the Bengali web entertainment industry in Kolkata was still in it’s nascent stage. B.C.Baal(2016)[4] was the first Bengali language web series. Then he directed Khyapa(2017-19)[2], a coming of age story of a small-town street smart teenager. The series was critically acclaimed both in India and Bangladesh. Khyapa[2] is noted for it’s use of Bengali Baul songs. After Khyapa[2], Korok directed Sufiyana Season 1(2017)[10], a period drama set in the pre-independence era. The story revolves around Sufi, a rebellious and free spirited young girl who challenges the norms of society and tries to break away from the shackles of rules set by the conservative Indian family. Kaali(2018)[3] was his next directorial venture. It is a racy thriller set in the background of the murky criminal underworld of Kolkata. The series shows a working-class mother’s struggle to save her son’s life and the length she goes to collect money for her son’s surgery. Kaali[3] was Zee5’s first Bengali web series and was appreciated a lot by fans. Krishanu Krishanu(2019)[11][12], was Korok's second venture with Zee5. The series is set on the life of the talented Indian footballer Krishanu Dey.

Currently he is working on opening his own film production company and is in talks with the international OTT streaming platforms for producing digital content with his new latest webseries[13] Sundarbaner Vidyasagar (2022)[14][15] starring Riddhi Sen[16] and Ushashi Ray In Hoichoi[17].
