Kory Stevens is a shoe designer and start-up founder best known for being the co-founder and CEO of Taft, a men's shoes e-commerce company based in Provo, Utah.
Stevens and his wife, Mallory Stevens, launched Taft from their rented one bedroom apartment in 2013 as recent graduates of Brigham Young University. The original focus of the company was high-end 'no-show' socks under the brand name 'Wimbley.' Initial start-up capital for Taft came from a variety of side businesses the couple launched, including buying board games in bulk from China and reselling to US buyers. Taft launched a Kickstarter campaign in 2014 that generated $46,000 from 1,016 backers over the course of three months and funded their first major inventory purchase of 10,000 socks [1]. The campaign and subsequent sale made the front page of Reddit, driving hundreds of thousands of new customers to the website and exhausting their supply in a matter of days [2].
In 2015, Taft launched its first line of men's shoes through its website on preorder. The success of the first line of shoes fueled investment into 30 new styles over the next 12 months. The company's growth has been profiled by Business Insider, The Daily Herald, Gents Lounge, BestLeather, The Daily Universe and Shopify, among others. As of 2017, Taft has 40,000 customers. [3]
