Kosta Gara is a businessperson[1] and author.[2][better source needed][3][better source needed]
Early life[edit]
Gara's father was a career military official, and during the Iranian Revolution he was falsely accused of being an enemy of the state.[4][unreliable source?] He later died from a heart attack due to the torture he endured while in prison.[3] At the age of 13, fearing that he would be recruited by the Basij, Gara's mother paid a smuggler to get him out of Iran.[5] Gara was caught in Turkey, and after refusing to divulge information about the smuggler, was sent to a maximum security prison back in Iran.[4][better source needed] He was imprisoned for six months, including a week in solitary confinement.[3] Gara's uncle eventually found him, and his grandfather paid for his release.[6]
After his release, Gara reuinited with his mother. They hired another smuggler, and escaped to Greece. Local police officers who found the pair hiding in a cornfield took them to Athens to secure immigration documents, and Gara worked by cleaning toilets on Greek ships.[4]
At 18, Gara and his mother immigrated to Canada, due to their refugee sponsorships program.[7]
Gara studied computer engineering at Carleton University.[8] By his third year, he dropped out to join a direct sales company. He later went to work selling electronic equipment. Gara eventually left his job and invested into starting a software business.[4]
Career[edit]
Gara's career began as a regional sales director and general manager with two Fortune 50 companies.[8][9][10]
In 2001, Gara became a regional distributor of the Lexxus Cosmetics company, now known as NHT Global.[1]
In 2007, Gara co-founded bHIP, a direct sales company in the energy drink market based in Dallas.[11][not in citation given][12][unreliable source?]
In 2011, Gara founded Vionic, a company involved with social media marketing.[8][13]
