Bagchi was previously associated with the Indian National Congress and served as a spokesperson for the party's West Bengal unit.

Political career

In the Indian National Congress

Bagchi was a prominent spokesperson of the Indian National Congress in West Bengal. In 2023, he was arrested for making remarks against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Following his release, he shaved his head in protest and pledged to stay bald until the TMC was ousted from power.

In February 2024, Bagchi resigned from the Congress, citing the party's alleged compromise with the TMC. He accused the leadership of neglecting the fight against corruption and political violence in the state.

Joining the Bharatiya Janata Party

On 29 February 2024, Bagchi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was welcomed by senior BJP leaders Suvendu Adhikari and Sukanta Majumdar. He stated that the BJP was the only viable opposition to the TMC in West Bengal.

Legal activism

In May 2025, Bagchi filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court challenging the West Bengal government’s appointment of 100 civic volunteers at the newly built Jagannath temple in Digha, alleging political motives behind the recruitment.

Controversies

In May 2025, a complaint was lodged against Bagchi after he posted excerpts from a book by the late Dipak Ghosh, a former TMC minister. The excerpts were interpreted as defamatory toward Mamata Banerjee, leading to accusations of maligning the Chief Minister’s image.
