PT Kramatdjati Asri Sejati is Indonesian bus companies based in Bandung, West Java. Kramat Djati serves intercity bus and tourism. Its head office and garage are located on Jalan Ambon 3, Bandung. Founded by Arief Budiman in 1968, this bus company serves the routes Java, Sumatra, Bali, and West Nusa Tenggara. Kramat Djati has two main garages, namely in Bandung and the Pasar Jumat area in Lebak Bulus, Cilandak, South Jakarta. This PO also has a subsidiary specifically managing tourist buses, called Pakar Wisata, which is located in the same location as the main Kramat Djati garage in Bandung.

History

Before becoming widely known as the founder of PO Kramat Djati, Arief Budiman first entered the transportation business by establishing a livestock transport truck company called Sumber Djaja in 1968. This venture laid the foundation for Arief's understanding of transportation management, from fleet management to field operations. Armed with this experience, two years later Arief saw a greater opportunity in the passenger transport sector, so in 1970 he founded Kramat Djati to serve intercity bus transportation.[1][2]

The first route served by the Kramat Djati bus was the medium-distance intercity and interprovincial route JakartaBandung. This route was chosen due to the high mobility of people between the two cities, both for business, education, and personal travel. Kramat Djati's presence on this route received a positive response from the public, thus providing the company with a starting point to expand its network and increase its bus fleet.[1][2]

Five years after its operation, Kramat Djati began expanding by opening a new route from Bandung City to Merak Port in Cilegon City, Banten. This step demonstrated management's boldness in pursuing more strategic and busy routes, particularly as a land connection to Sumatra. This expansion marked a phase in the company's growth, as it became increasingly serious about expanding its intercity and interprovincial services.[1][2]

Kramat Djati's development continued in 1986 with the launch of a fast night bus service that served three provinces simultaneously: Central Java, East Java, and Yogyakarta Special Region. This innovation addressed passengers' needs for more efficient and comfortable long-distance travel. Furthermore, in 1990, Kramat Djati further expanded its network by opening a route to Bali, thus strengthening its position as one of the major bus companies in Indonesia. [1][2]

Thanks to Arief Budiman's skill in managing the company, Kramat Djati continued to grow and survive amidst the intense competition in the land transportation industry. Disciplined management, strategic route selection, and the ability to understand market needs have enabled Kramat Djati to grow into a bus company to be reckoned with. To this day, Kramat Djati remains in existence and even controls a market share of around 45% in Java, an achievement that demonstrates the strong public trust in the company's services.[1][2]

In 1995, Kramat Djati's status was officially confirmed as a limited liability company under the name PT Kramatdjati Asri Sejati. A year after the legal entity was ratified, the company undertook a major expansion by opening routes across Sumatra, covering Lampung, Palembang, Pekanbaru, and Bengkulu City. Furthermore, in 2000, Kramat Djati expanded its reach again by opening the BandungMataram route, which connects the island of Java with West Nusa Tenggara.[1]

Currently, the leadership of Kramat Djati is continued by Arief's three children, namely Nining Kartini Iskandar, Agus, and Munadjad. The three manage different divisions according to their respective fields, with Kartini Iskandar in charge of the Jakarta division, Agus managing the Bandung division and the subsidiary PT Pakar Utama or Pakar Wisata, while Munadjad is responsible for the Kramat Djati tourist bus division in Bandung. To date, Kramat Djati has around 70 routes covering various regions in Sumatra, Java, Bali, and West Nusa Tenggara, and is supported by tourism business unit, further strengthening the company's presence in the national transportation industry.[1]

Fleet

PO Kramat Djati is known as one of the bus companies in Indonesia with a long history of using a fleet with a very diverse combination of chassis and bodywork. In its operations, the company has relied on various well-known chassis brands, such as Hino, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, and Scania. This diversity of chassis options demonstrates Kramat Djati's flexibility in adapting to operational needs and technological developments in commercial vehicles of every era, both for intercity and tourism services. This approach keeps Kramat Djati's fleet relevant and competitive in terms of performance, comfort, and reliability across a variety of travel conditions.[1]

In terms of bodywork, Kramat Djati is also known for its adaptability and adherence to evolving bus design trends. The company has used several major bodywork companies, including Adi Putro, Laksana, Morodadi Prima, Rahayu Santosa, Restu Ibu Pusaka, and Tri Sakti. In the 1990s and 2000s, Kramat Djati was synonymous with the combination of a Mercedes-Benz chassis and an Adi Putro body, which at the time was considered the ideal combination for high-end intercity buses. This bodywork choice not only reflected aesthetic tastes but also considered passenger comfort and long-term body durability.[1]

One important milestone in the history of the Kramat Djati fleet is its use of Neoplan bodies. This monocoque-bodied bus was Adi Putro's first large bus product after acquiring an official license from Neoplan. Kramat Djati was listed as one of the operators using this bodywork, along with Bandung Express and Safari Dharma Raya. Since that era, Adi Putro has been a fairly consistent bodywork partner for Kramat Djati, right up to the modern era with the use of Jetbus5 bodies for the latest tourist bus units, emphasizing the continuity between history and innovation in their fleet. [3]

Apart from Adi Putro, Kramat Djati also strengthens its fleet with Laksana products. In September 2023, Kramat Djati released a new bus unit with the Laksana Legacy SR-3 bodywork for AKAP services[4] and Tourista for its tourism services.[5] Then, in early 2025, the company released three new bus units with the bodywork of Legacy SR-3 Neo XHD Prime Ultimate. This variant is a version of the Legacy SR-3 without the scarf near the front entrance, giving it a more minimalist and modern look. The buses use a Hino RM 280 chassis that has been equipped with air suspension, as well as additional facilities such as toilet and a "tiger cage" next to it that functions as a crew rest room, showing Kramat Djati's attention to the comfort of bus crew on long-distance trips.[6]

Distinctive characteristic

In terms of visual appearance, Kramat Djati has a very recognizable characteristic. In the 1990s to 2000s, their fleet was dominated by plain white with a paint pattern featuring the company logo in the form of three flying eggs.[6] After the company's ownership was continued by Arief's three children, the paint pattern underwent an update, with the intercity bus division using a combination of white and reddish orange color,[6] while the tourism division carried white, yellow, and green.[7] The meaning of the three flying eggs symbolizes Arief's three children who are expected to be a solid next generation.[8] In addition, Kramat Djati is also known for its use of Walt Disney character stickers, Mickey Mouse lying relaxed on a balloon, which symbolizes that the bus has used air suspension, a unique detail that further strengthens the visual identity of their fleet.[7]

Routes

Intercity Buses

Since its inception, intercity and interprovincial buses (AKAP) have been the primary business line of PO Kramat Djati, widely known in Indonesia for its extensive route network connecting various provinces and islands. Kramat Djati operates intercity bus services with routes covering areas in South Sumatra, such as Palembang, as far as Bengkulu and Lampung on Sumatra Island, and then throughout Java. There are even long-distance routes reaching the Nusa Tenggara Islands, including Denpasar and Bali, depending on the operating schedule and holiday season. Some popular services such as the JakartaDenpasar route show very long travel distances of up to 1,188 kilometres (738 mi), with travel times that can reach 23–28 hours depending on the departure point and travel season.[9][10]

Operationally, Kramat Djati offers various travel classes, from the more comfortable executive class to VIP, tailored to passengers' needs and budgets. Almost every city in Java is served by Kramat Djati, thus demonstrating the flexibility of this PO in serving long-distance travel throughout Java Island and its surroundings.[11][12]

The experiences of the Kramat Djati intercity bus drivers reflect the real challenges they face in their daily work. Intercity bus drivers, as often described in travel communities and forums, often have to prepare for long and demanding journeys—for example, providing basic necessities for passengers like drinking water, ensuring comfort for hours on the road, and remaining vigilant about security and safety. These kinds of challenges are often discussed in communities and videos of travel experiences on long routes, demonstrating that drivers must maintain high discipline and be prepared for various situations on the road.[13]

Non-route business

Pakar Wisata's tourist bus

Kramat Djati is not only known for its intercity bus services, but also develops tourist buses as a non-route business line that complements its operations. The Kramat Djati tourist bus fleet basically has specifications that are not much different from AKAP buses, both in terms of chassis, bodywork, and the facilities offered. However, the fleet is separated from regular buses, with a marker in the form of the text "Tourism Bus" written in large capital letters on the side body, a larger passenger carrying capacity with a 3-2 seat configuration, so it can accommodate large tour groups. In newer tourism units, especially those using the Adi Putro Jetbus5 bodywork, Kramat Djati equips the buses with modern facilities such as two LED TV screens for entertainment during the trip as well as drinking water dispensers that passengers can use to refill their mineral water independently.[7][8] In addition to large buses, this PO also operates medium bus with Tourista bodies from Laksana, which are generally used for medium-distance tourist trips, agency visits, or group trips with a more limited number of passengers.[5]

In addition to the directly managed fleet, the Kramat Djati group's tourist bus services are also operated through a subsidiary company, namely PT Pakar Utama, which operates under the name Pakar Wisata. The presence of this subsidiary expands the reach of Kramat Djati's tourism services, while also strengthening the group's business structure in the non-route segment. Since 2024, Pakar Wisata has visually emphasized its connection to the parent company by adopting Kramat Djati's old paint pattern, namely a dominant white color with the iconic three flying egg motif. This classic livery is applied to new units that use the Laksana Legacy SR-3 Neo bodywork, thus presenting a nostalgic feel as well as a strong corporate identity. This step demonstrates Kramat Djati's efforts to maintain brand continuity, both in its intercity and intercity bus services and in the tourism bus segment, which continues to grow in line with market needs.
