Kreider Farms is the largest egg producer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the 17th largest egg producer in the United States.[3] The operation is also a major dairy producer of fluid milk and ice cream with approximately 1,600 cows[4] under their supervision.

The company, based in Manheim, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, owns about 3,000 acres of farmland within a tri-county region encompassing Lancaster, Lebanon, and Dauphin counties in Central Pennsylvania.[4]

In addition to dairy products, Kreider Farms also produces a line of bottled flavored drinks including juices, lemonade, and iced tea. These products are sold in convenience stores and grocery retail outlets, such as Giant Food Stores[5] throughout Pennsylvania and elsewhere in the Mid-Atlantic region.

In 2017, the company introduced a lactose-free milk product.[6]

In early 2018, Kreider Farms introduced Noah’s Pride Cage Free and Organic Cage Free Eggs following several years of investment in creating humane egg production facilities.[7]

History[edit]

Kreider Farms got its start in 1935 when Noah W. Kreider and his wife Mary R. Kreider (nee Hershey) along with their sons Richard and Noah, Jr. purchased Mary’s childhood home and farm in Manheim from her father, John B. Hershey. The farm had been in the Hershey family since 1739, when the local area was first being settled by German-Swiss immigrants, and Christian Hershey set up a farmstead on the site.[8]

Noah and Mary began with a herd of a dozen dairy cattle and 200 chickens. They also grew vegetables, which they sold door to door in the Manheim area.[9]

Growing land expanded throughout the middle part of the 20th century as Richard and Noah, Jr. became involved in the family business.[10]

By 1972, the Kreiders had built a processing plant and retail store in Manheim to bottle and sell their milk locally. The business continued to grow throughout the latter years of the 20th century, and leadership passed to the third generation for the family, as Ron Kreider, son of Noah Jr., became President and CEO.[9]

21st Century Initiatives[edit]

Kreider Farms is now focused on growing its dairy business[4] while promoting sustainability and humane living conditions for its animals. The company celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2015.[10]

In 2016, Kreider Farms achieved American Humane Certification[11] for its cage-free eggs.[12]

Interesting Facts[edit]

Mary R. Hershey was a cousin of Milton Hershey, creator of Hershey’s Chocolate.[8]

Between 1980 and 2007, Kreider Farms owned and operated several popular, family-style restaurants in the Lancaster and Hershey, PA areas.[13]
