Back to the Roots, Inc. is a privately-owned American organic gardening company based in Oakland, California. The company was co-founded by Nikhil Arora and Alejandro Velez in 2009.[1][2]
History[edit]
Back to the Roots was founded in 2009 by Nikhil Arora and Alejandro Velez[3] who met at University of California, Berkeley.[4][5] The company began by selling mushrooms grown from used coffee grounds to local restaurants.[6][7][8] The mushrooms were later accepted by Whole Foods Market.[9]
One of the first products was a grow-your-own mushroom kit[10][11] which used recycled coffee grounds from Peet's Coffee & Tea as the growing substrate and was packed into a cardboard box.[12][13] Since then, the company has introduced organic seeds and other indoor gardening kits.[14][15][16]
The company also sold a cereal made from ingredients produced through biodynamic farming.[7][17][18] In 2017, the cereal became two of the five breakfast cereals in New York City's public school system.[4] The company subsequently licensed off the cereal line to Nature's Path.[19] The company has also partnered with Sodexo, a food services and facilities management company.[20]
