The Kreuz Alzey (German: Autobahnkreuz Alzey) is a cloverleaf interchange with a semi-direct link in the German state Rhineland-Palatinate.
The interchange forms the connection between the A61 Venlo-Dreieck Hockenheim and the A63 Mainz-Dreieck Kaiserslautern. [1]
Geography
The interchange lies in the municipal area of Albig northwest of Alzey. Nearby cities and villages are Alzey, Albig, Bermersheim, and Ensheim.
Building form and road layout
Three-quarters of the interchange is built as a normal cloverleaf interchange. The A 63 coming from Mainz, connecting to the A 61 towards Ludwigshafen am Rhein, has a long two-lane bridgespan, like in a stack interchange. The form of this interchange was chosen during planning in 1984; the A63 towards Kaiserslautern was opened to traffic in 2004.
Until the opening of the A63, all heavy traffic to Kaiserslautern had to use the A 61 to Ludwigshafen and the A 6. Due to the heavy traffic volume in Germany and the heavy traffic blocking of the B9 between Mainz and Worms, the traffic pressure on this stretch of the A61 is still high.
Trivia
The interchange crosses the B 271 as well as the rail line between Alzey and Armsheim, the Alzey–Mainz railway and Rheinhessenbahn Alzey–Bingen am Rhein. The high-voltage power line Bürstadt–Hoheneck crosses the northern part of the interchange.
