Kristina Schiano (born August 1, 1995) is an American drummer and musician, most popular for her YouTube videos.

Early life and education[edit]

Kristina was born in Brooklyn, New York and is the youngest of two children. Her father is a guitarist and her mother is a retired art teacher. With music and art running in the family, Schiano began taking guitar lessons at the age of 7. After one year, she grew bored of the instrument and decided to learn how to play the drums. At age 9, she took drum lessons but soon after quit due to her favorite instructor changing jobs. From then on, Kristina has been teaching herself how to play the drums by listening to different artists, studying other drummers, and watching drum videos on YouTube.

Schiano graduated with her bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College. She majored in marketing and minored in music technology.

Career[edit]

Partnerships and projects[edit]

In 2017, Schiano partnered with Yamaha to be the face of their new product, the EAD10.[1]

Kristina performed three days in a row at Google's YouTube AdWeek in 2019, alongside Next Town Down.[2]

In 2020, Kristina partnered up with the US Navy in their promotional campaign called Sailor VS.[3] This campaign placed famous YouTube stars in the lives of a Navy soldier with similar skills.

Schiano went on her first American tour which was sponsored by SJC Drums and Vans in 2020. She was the opening act for Frank Zummo of Sum 41.[4] The weeklong tour took place in Miami, Orlando, New Orleans, and Round Rock.

Schiano had a Limited Edition Signature Snare Drum series with SJC Drums in 2019. Only 5 were made and were sold out in a few hours.[5] SJC and Kristina partnered up a second time to release a Signature Practice Pad in 2021.[6]

Kristina partnered up with Zildjian Drumsticks to release her first custom drumstick line in 2020.[7]

Other companies Kristina has worked with include Walmart, LG Home Appliances, Sweetwater[8], Pokémon, The Red Cross, and Modern Drummer.[9]

YouTube growth[edit]

Kristina posted her first video on YouTube in 2009. It was a drum cover of "Ocean Avenue" by Yellowcard. [10] It wasn't until 2014 when her channel started to gain some attention. Her covers of "Uptown Funk" by Bruno Mars [11] and then "Helena" by My Chemical Romance [11],in 2017, took her channel to the next level. During that time, Kristina found her niche which was drumming to early 2000s punk rock music. She began posting weekly drum videos, many of them reaching millions of views. Her number one viewed video is "Bring Me To Life" by Evanescence[12] and has over 27 million views alone. In 2019, she reached one million subscribers on YouTube and received a Gold Play Button. Since then, her channel has amassed over 300 videos and a total of 170 million views.

Television[edit]

Kristina made her television debut in 2021 while appearing on Late Night With Seth Meyers. She filled in with the 8G Band for four nights in a row.

Podcast appearances[edit]

Schiano has been a guest on multiple podcast episodes. In the series, Silent Superheroes, Schiano opened up about her struggles with anxiety and depression.[13] She stated that music, cognitive behavioral therapy, and a strict schedule has helped her overcome her struggles.

In an episode on the Bunk Alley Podcast, Kristina revealed that she has celiac disease, which is an incurable autoimmune disease that has a reaction to gluten. She spoke about the many years of health issues that led up to that life changing diagnosis.[14]

Kristina dialed in on the topic of cyberbullying on the Drumeo Gab Podcast. She has been vocal about the hateful comments she receives on the YouTube platform for many years.[15]

Influences[edit]

Kristina's favorite drummer growing up was Travis Barker of Blink 182. In 2008, when YouTube drum covers began emerging, Schiano found new influences. Some of her top picks were Casey Cooper, Cobus Potgieter, Matt McGuire, and Luke Holland.[16] This group of drummers were a big influence in Schiano posting her first video on the YouTube platform. Later in her life, Kristina became friends with her YouTube heroes, and has since made appearances with each of them at the NAMM Convention. [17]

Collaborations[edit]

Schiano has posted multiple collaborations on her YouTube channel. She's performed three separate times at the YouTube Space LA while attending the NAMM convention. She performed with Cole Rolland, Angel Vivaldi, Halocene, Anna Sentina, and Future Sunsets. Her viral video of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata was filmed there.[18] Other collaborations include Casey Cooper, Kristina Rybalchenko, and Jared Falk.[19]
