In 1908, following the Young Turk Revolution, Sheikh Abd al-Salam Barzani led an armed resistance against the Ottomans.[8][9][6] His forces successfully repelled the Ottoman military from the Barzan region, inflicting heavy casualties and forcing a temporary retreat.
Background
Following the Young Turk Revolution (July 1908), the new Young Turk government attempted to enforce conscription and taxation in Kurdish regions. The Barzani tribe, led by Abd al-Salam Barzani, viewed these policies as threats to Kurdish autonomy.[6]
Clashes
In 1908, Barzani forces:
- Inflicted heavy casualties on government troops[6]
- Maintained de facto autonomy despite Ottoman pressure[6]
- the Kurds forced the Ottoman forces to retreat from Barzan.[4][5]
McDowall explicitly states:
"The next few years were characterized by repeated armed clashes in which the government suffered heavy casualties."[6]
