Kutyadi Dam
Kuttyadi Dam is a large saddle dam located at Kakkayam in Koorachund panchayath of Koyilandy Taluk in Kozhikode District [1] Kuttiadi Dam is constructed across the Kuttyadi River, which originates from Narikota Elevation in Wayanad Hills of Ghats.[2] It was commissioned in 2006. Dam is 121 metres (397 ft) long and 16.5 metres (54 ft) high. It is a concrete gravity dam measuring 8400 cubic meters.[3] [4] The Kuttiadi dam is located at Kakkayam in Koorachund panchayath of Koyilandy Taluk in Kozhikode District [5]The Kuttiyadi river flows through Koyilandy taluk mainly and at the end reaches the border of Vadakara taluk.
Hydroelectric Project[edit]
The water from the reservoir is conveyed through a water conductor system to the two power stations of Kuttiyadi Hydro Electric Project (KHEP) with an installed capacity of 225 MW (3 x 25 +3 x 50 ) located at Kakkayam valley. The tail water is again utilized at Kuttiady Tail Race Project – 3×1.25 MW and Kakkayam Small HEP ( 2x 1.5 MW). After generating power, the water is released to downstream Peruvannamuzhy reservoir.[6]This is one of the major projects operated by KSEB which supplies power to large area of Kerala.[7]
The project envisages creation of a reservoir of gross capacity 38.40 M.Cube by constructing a 40 meter high masonry dam across kutyadi river. The diversion of the water through a tunnel system of 920 meters long conductor tunnel, 2083 meters of penstock and two stretched of penstock tunnels of 554 meters and 93 meters to a generating station with 75 MW capacity. ( 25 x 3) This produces 245 million units of power every year. [8] in 2010 new project of 100 MW was inaugurated.
Description[edit]
Kuttiyadi Dam is a straight gravity masonry dam with length of 228.6 meters. The dam has 10 blocks covering non-overflow and overflow sections. The spillway is provided in block number 4. Two vents are provided for the spillway. The construction of the Dam was started in 1962 and was completed in 1972. Even though its a masonry dam, the upstream face is lined with concrete.[9]

Kuttyadi Augmentation scheme[edit]
Kuttiyadi augmentation scheme which is better known as Banasura sagar multipurpose scheme aims at harnessing the potential of the river Karamanathodu, a tributary of Kabani by diversion of waters to kuttyadi reservoir. It consists of a Spillway dam of concrete, Main Dam which is an embarkment earth fill dam, Kuttyadi Saddle dam which is a homogenous earth fill type, A saddle dam near Kottagiri, Kosani Saddle Dam which is an earthen fill dam, Manjoora saddle dam and Nayanmoola saddle dam.
