L. Carlos Lara is an American financial consultant, author, and business advisor known for his work promoting the Infinite Banking Concept (IBC) and his collaborations with economist Robert P. Murphy and IBC founder R. Nelson Nash. Lara is the co-author of two notable works in the field of alternative finance, How Privatized Banking Really Works and The Case for IBC. He also co-hosts The Lara-Murphy Podcast, a show focusing on Austrian economics and personal financial strategy.
Early life and education
Lara was born in Mexico and later moved to Texas as a child.[1] Though detailed information on his formal education is limited, Lara became self-educated in Austrian economics and spent much of his professional life in business consulting and finance.[2]
Career
Lara is the founder and CEO of United Services and Trust Corporation, a financial consulting firm based in Nashville, Tennessee, established in 1976.[3] His early work focused on business restructuring, capital formation, and debtor-creditor negotiations. In the 1980s, Lara taught credit management courses to executives seeking certification through the National Association of Credit Management (NACM).
Lara has also held all the required licenses as a Registered Broker‑Dealer and member of the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), with experience in the financial services sector.[4]
Contributions to the Infinite Banking Concept
Lara is a prominent figure in the IBC community, having collaborated extensively with Nelson Nash, the founder of IBC, and economist Robert Murphy. Together, the trio produced foundational educational content that applies Austrian economics to personal and business finance.
Lara co-authored two major books in the IBC canon:
- How Privatized Banking Really Works (2010), with Robert P. Murphy[5]
