The LA Riot Squad is a supporters group for the Los Angeles Galaxy that stands in sections 137, 138, and 139.[1]
After a loss in the 2001 MLS Cup, then-Los Angeles Galaxy keeper Kevin Hartman challenged a group of Galaxy fans to form a supporter group of 100 people by opening day of 2002. The reward if they were able to do this was a keg of beer. They did it, and formed the LA Riot Squad.[2]
The Riot Squad chose its name as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the LA riots, and as a playful send-up of "hard core" supporter groups.[3]
The group is primarily known for its love of beer, multi-ethnic makeup,[4] and stated desire to get under the skin of the Galaxy's opponents (also notably, mayor and stated Chivas USA fan Antonio Villaraigosa for pretending to be a Galaxy fan during the signing of David Beckham,[5] and the Galaxy's own Beckham upon returning from AC Milan after being forced back to the team after stating his desire to stay in Milan).[6][7]
They've grown to take over a corner of the Home Depot Center, and are now a non-profit organization focused on local charities, as well as a supporter group.[8]
The Riot Squad congregates under a giant branded canopy before games in the grass by the entrance gate near parking Lot 13.[8]
