Reception[edit]
On August 26, 2022, a mother in Allegan was touring L.E. White Middle School before the school year with her sons, when she found a small room labeled as a 'Calming Lab.' She then entered the room, and took photos with her mobile phone. She uploaded them to Facebook, noting the absence of any padding on the walls, and a 'cage-like thingy' on the ceiling. Local news stations then reported on the topic,[5] bringing a controversy of both mistreatment and abuse of students. Allegan Public Schools later announced that the rooms had not been in usage, but government documents revealed that multiple students had been placed in the rooms repeatedly, in one case over 30 times in a 2 month period. Reportedly, most of the rooms have been removed as of the 2023-24 school year.[6]
Following the construction of a new science wing following the 2022-2023 school year, news station Fox has reported on accounts from parents about missing ceiling tiles and exposed wires, bringing concerns of safety to the public.
