La Gran Plaza is a shopping mall in the city of León, Guanajuato, Mexico.

History[edit]

La Gran Plaza opened on November 15, 1991.[2] Developed by a consortium of Gerardo Gómez Orozco and Chicago-based Schafer Associates, construction was completed in just eight months.[1] Among the initial tenants were anchor Salinas & Rocha and the first McDonald's location in the city.[2]

The mall suffered a major blow in 2019 when Liverpool, owner of the Fábricas de Francia banner, announced it would close the La Gran Plaza location instead of converting it to its Liverpool or Suburbia nameplates.[3] The mall's occupancy rate was reported at 30 percent in 2019 with the closure of Fábricas, though Cinépolis continued to operate its movie theater.[4] Competition from other malls, particularly on the city's growing east side, was cited as a reason for the struggles of La Gran Plaza.[5]

Other malls with the same name[edit]

La Gran Plaza in León is co-owned with La Gran Plaza Fashion Mall [es] in Guadalajara, Jalisco. Two other Mexican shopping centers are named La Gran Plaza, in Mazatlan (La Gran Plaza Mazatlán [es]) and Cancún. In addition, La Gran Plaza de Fort Worth in Fort Worth, Texas, and Gran Plaza 2 [es] near Madrid use similar names.
