La Repompa de Málaga is the stage name of Enriqueta de la Santísima Trinidad de los Reyes Porras (August 15, 1937 – May 6, 1959), who was a flamenco singer from Andalusia, Spain. She was born in La Puente street, belonging in the neighbourhood El Perchel, and died in her native town very young, at the age of 21.[1]

Biography[edit]

Enriqueta Reyes started to sing when she was very young, running away from home to sing in the bars of Málaga, so that she could raise some money. The guitarist Niño de Almería heard her singing and thanks to him she became a part of a group called Los Vargas, formed by the flamenco artists La Quica, La Cañeta and Pepito Vargas. Her fame as a singer increased when she started to work at El Refugio, a flamenco venue located at the Marquesa de Moya street. Two months after she started her performances at the party venue El Pimpi, she received a telegram from Pastora Imperio, who wanted her to move to Madrid due to the contract offers Pastora had got for her (one of them in Madrid and the other one in San Sebastián).

Enriqueta Reyes Porras recorded seven flamenco songs at the end of the fifties that have captivated fans and artists, including several leading flamenco figures.[2][3] She did not record so many productions, but in the few she had recorded, Paco Aguilera was the guitarist.

In 1959, La Repompa was going to perform before Franco, but she could not attend as she felt ill. She moved to Malaga and, after spending eight days bed-bound, as her condition became worse. On May 2, the disease worsened and on May 6 she died with only 21 years of age. A fulminant peritonitis made the voice of this young artist disappear.[4]

According to experts, La Repompa had what is considered a State funeral, because the funeral procession started its walk from her neighbourhood El Perchel and proceeded through La Alameda, continued through the street called Calle Larios (something that had never happened) and her coffin was rocked before the party venue El Pimpi. It also went on through the street Calle de la Victoria and, finally, Enriqueta was buried in San Miguel cemetery. Eighteen days after her death, Alberty, a well-known person at that time, paid tribute to the memory of La Repompa.

La Repompa's sister Rafaela Reyes and niece Amparo Heredia are also flamenco singers.[5] In February 2012, a book was published about the life of La Repompa, which was written by Paco Roji, Ramón Soler Díaz and Paco Fernández.[6] Paco Fernández and Paco Roji created a documentary about La Repompa called La Repompa 70.
