Lady Jean Alice Elaine Cochrane later Jean Hervey and then Lady Jean MacDonald (1887–1955) was a Welsh and Scottish aristocrat. She was the daughter of Winifred, Countess of Dundonald and Douglas Cochrane, 12th Earl of Dundonald.[1][2] She appeared in British publications and divorced her unfaithful husband. She remarried to a Member of Parliament and launched the warship HMS Enchantress.
Work and duties
Jean was a famous figure in her time, in her youth, she modelled for prominent publications and appeared in The Bystander[3], Tatler[4][5], Country Life[6], and The Sketch[7].
During the first world war, Lady Jean became a nurse who treated the casualties.[8]
On 14 July 1937 she launched the Royal Navy warship HMS Enchantress.[9]
Personal life
Lady Jean was the fourth child to Winifred and Douglas Cochrane, who spent most of her youth at Gwrych Castle.[10][11]
On the 19th of October, 1914 she married Herbert Hervey, 5th Marquess of Bristol with whom, produced a son; Victor Hervey, 6th Marquess of Bristol, his godmother was the Spanish Queen Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg.[12]
In 1932, after lady Jean discovered that her husband was having an affair at their Portman Square apartment, she filed for divorce on grounds of adultery and in July of that same year, the divorce was granted without Herbert contesting, with Portsmouth Evening News's divorce section, stating; "Lady Jean complained of her husband's association with other women shortly after they were married, and differences arose".[13]
On December of 1933, Lady Jean remarried at a London register office to a Captain Peter Macdonald[14] where she lived the remaining of her life with until her death in 1955. Peter, later Sir Peter, was a career Conservative politician for the Isle of Wight.[15]
