Revaz (Rezo) Ilyich Lagidze (Georgian: რევაზ ილიას ძე ლაღიძე; 1921—1981) — Soviet-Georgian composer.
Biography[edit]
He was born July 10, 1921 in the village of Baghdati in the Russian Empire, now Georgia.
In 1948 he graduated from the Tbilisi Conservatory as a composer. He was a pupil of Andria Balanchivadze. He began his artistic career in 1940. His first work in cinematography was the 1951 documentary "Assault on Eleven Peaks".
He was a violinist in the Georgian Philharmonic (1941-1945) and later the Georgian Radio (1945-1949) symphony orchestras. From 1962 he was the head of the music department of the Tbilisi Pedagogical Institute.
From 1964 he taught at the Tbilisi Conservatory.
Songwriting occupies a significant place in Lagidze's oeuvre. In collaboration with the poet Petre Gruzinsky he wrote the famous song "Tbiliso". He worked on musical comedies, as well as symphonic and chamber instrumental works. He also composed piano pieces, lyrical songs, and music for plays and films. He wrote the opera "Lela" (first staged in 1973 with the participation of Medea Amiranashvili, Zurab Anjaparidze, Tariel Chichinadze, Jemal Mdivani, Shota Chankvetadze, and Elza Garsevanishvili).
He died on October 16, 1981.
Honors[edit]
- One of the music schools in Tbilisi was named after the composer.
- The Tbilisi Pedagogical Institute, where Revaz Lagidze taught for about 20 years, established a prize named after him.
