Lance Ray Christensen is an American politician and education policy executive. He is currently the Vice President of Education Policy and Government Affairs at the California Policy Center. Christensen is a candidate in the 2022 California Superintendent of Public Instruction election.

Early life and education[edit]

Christensen was born in Provo, Utah. He attended Rangeview High School in Aurora, Colorado before graduating from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in English in 2001. He earned his master’s degree in Public Policy from Pepperdine University School of Public Policy in 2004.[1]

Career[edit]

After serving as an educational assistant in Aurora Public Schools and finishing graduate school, which included internships for the Israeli Consulate and Reason Foundation, Christensen began his career in the California State Legislature as a Senate Fellow in California State University, Sacramento Capital Fellows Program. As a finance budget analyst at the California Department of Finance, he oversaw the budget of the Department of Juvenile Justice and helped develop Proposition 98 education funding for schools to keep students out of the criminal justice system. Christensen worked as a legislative consultant in the California State Senate off and on for fifteen years. Most recently, he served as the chief of staff to then-California State Senator John Moorlach. In this position, he tackled major policy issues, ranging from unsustainable government budgets to the inadequate education system.[2]

Outside of the government, Christensen served as the director of the Pension Reform Project for Reason Foundation, working to reform state and local retirement funding across the country.[3] He was the chief strategist for Fix California’s Education Savings Account Initiative.[4] He is currently the Vice President of Education Policy and Government Affairs at the California Policy Center. With the think tank, he directly oversees the operations of ParentUnion.org and California Local Elected Officials.[5][6]

In March 2022, Christensen announced his candidacy in the 2022 California Superintendent of Public Instruction election.[7][8][9] He was previously a candidate for the San Juan Unified School Board and sat as an assistant chair for that school district’s citizen oversight finance committee.[10]

Personal life[edit]

Christensen lives in Yuba County, California with his wife and five children, all of whom are in the public school system with the three youngest homeschooled through a charter program. They are all 7th generation Californians.[11]
