"Landmine" is a song by American singer-songwriter Finneas. It was released by OYOY on February 9, 2018, as a standalone single. Finneas wrote and produced the song by himself. Musically, a pop and electropop track, the song's lyrics are about letting go and realizing that the end is near.

Background and composition[edit]

"Landmine" was written and produced solely by Finneas.[1] It was released for digital download through his record label OYOY on May 3, 2018.[2] In an interview with Variance Finneas stated: "This song is a little like a diary entry for me. It scared me the first time I played it for anyone because I was saying things in it I’d only thought privately to myself until that point. I think the universality of the song is probably just because everyone knows what it feels like to realize loving someone is even more painful than leaving them."[3]

Finneas tells Ones to Watch, "I wrote 'Landmine' on Christmas Eve. It was one of those songs that comes really fast. I usually find that to be the case when you're writing something and realizing it's how you feel at the same time. It's about the point at the end of a relationship or a friendship where you realize the only way to heal is to let it all go. Bad news never has good timing.”[4] Musically, the song is identified as a pop and electropop track.[4][5] It features minimalist production that consists of piano and percussion, while it has layered vocals.[4] The lyrics refer to the time-bomb of a relationship that is not going well and the highlight of an emotional maturity.[4]

Critical reception[edit]

When it was released, "Landmine" was praised by Ones to Watch's Dana Jacobs, who commended the lyrics and instrumentation, saying "the mastery of production and impressive lyrical honesty reaffirm what his previous work".[4]
