"Heaven" is a song by American singer-songwriter Finneas. It was released for digital download as a standalone single on March 23, 2018 by OYOY. Finneas co-wrote and produced the song with Dan Nigro, making it the first Finneas song to feature production from someone other than Finneas himself. Musically an indie-pop track, Finneas' lyrics on the song address several topics, including being infatuated with someone.
Background and composition[edit]
The song was written and produced by Finneas and Dan Nigro.[1] It was released for digital download through his record label OYOY on March 23, 2018.[2] In an interview with Atwood Magazine, Finneas explains that "it [was] during this period of my life when I was 18 and I was seeing a girl for the first time and we were just like out together in LA. We’d go to the beach and just wander around. It kind of fucked up my day to day life because I was exhausted all the time. I’d just come out of a long-term relationship and I didn’t feel like either of us knew each other very well, but we were spending a lot of time together and it was romantic in a slightly more dangerous way than I’d ever been involved in".[1]
Musically, the song is identified as an indie-pop track and features a minimalist production consisting of piano, guitar and drums.[1][3] Ones to Watch says the lyrical content has a "peak of a youthful lust, insatiable and infatuated. He speaks of an almost primal attraction, something which has not been diluted by the sensibility of age". Some of the lyrics are: "Heaven isn't as wonderful/Heaven isn't as beautiful as you/Isn't as wonderful/Heaven isn't as beautiful as you/So what if I'm fucked up, fallin' in love/So what if I'm such a sucker for pleasure/So what if one night is never enough/Drive me insane".[4]
Critical reception[edit]
Upon the release of "Heaven", Kristin Robinson of Ones to Watch praised the song, commenting that Finneas "manages to skillfully articulate unadulterated lust better than any product in the 50 Shades of Grey franchise in less than four minutes".[4] Danielle Holian of Pure M Magazine commended the lyrics and instrumentation, saying "his voice is soothing and relaxing on this masterpiece. "Heaven" will speak to your soul making you feel the pain and pleasure simultaneously".[5]
