The Lanitis Group (Greek: Όμιλος Λανίτη) is one of the largest and oldest business groups in Cyprus. Founded in 1896 as N.P. Lanitis & Co. by brothers Nicolas and Costas P. Lanitis, the group has diversified over more than a century into sectors including construction, property development, tourism, hospitality, shipping, energy, leisure, and agriculture.[1] The group is currently under the leadership of the fourth generation of the Lanitis family, with the fifth generation gradually assuming responsibilities.[2] The holding company, Lanitis E.C. Holdings Ltd., is headquartered in Limassol.[3]

History

Origins

The roots of the Lanitis Group lie with Panayis Sykas, a farmer and trader from the village of Lania in the Limassol District. Towards the end of Ottoman rule in 1878, Sykas settled in Limassol and became known as Panayis Lanitis after his village of origin. He married Angelica Kyza and had five children, including two sons: Nicolas P. Lanitis and Costas P. Lanitis.[4]

In 1896, Nicolas and Costas established the partnership N.P. Lanitis & Co. with an initial capital of 12 pounds, borrowed against a Credit Foncier bond held by Nicolas at the Ottoman Bank.[4] The firm began as a general trading company dealing in foodstuffs, fertilizers, timber, iron, and other goods.[5]

Early expansion

In 1901, the Lanitis brothers, together with other Limassol citizens, co-founded the Popular Savings Bank of Limassol, which later became the Laiki Bank.[1] In 1927, they co-founded the Cyprus Wines and Spirits Company (KEO) with a 45% stake, from which they withdrew in 1950.[6]

In the 1930s, the brothers acquired large tracts of agricultural land: in 1933, at the villages of Alectora and Kouklia, part of which later became the Aphrodite Hills Golf Resort; and in 1936, Nicolas P. Lanitis created Lanitis Farm, covering approximately 980 acres (3.8 million m2) west of Limassol, part of which later housed the Fasouri Watermania Waterpark.[1]

Mid-20th century

The group continued to expand during and after World War II. In 1940, the Cyprus Silk Filature Ltd. was formed. Amathus Navigation Ltd. was established in 1943 (later renamed Amathus Ltd.) and Cybarco Ltd., a building and road construction company, in 1945.[5] In 1952, Lanitis N. & E. Estates Ltd. was registered, which was later renamed Lanitis E.C. Holdings Ltd. and became the holding company of the group.[1]

The group expanded abroad in 1960 with the creation of N.P. Lanitis (Hellas) in Athens and N.P. Lanitis (UK) in London. That same year, the Cyprus Paint Company (KEX) was established. In 1963, N.P. Lanitis took on the nationwide representation of AGIP for gas distribution.[5]

Leadership of Evagoras Lanitis

The group grew significantly under the leadership of Evagoras K. Lanitis (1921-1992), son of Costas P. Lanitis. Evagoras, a University of Cambridge law graduate, was known for his humanitarian contributions in the fields of education, archaeology, health, and culture.[7] Following his death in 1992, his sons Platon, Costas, and Marios took over the management of the group, with Platon Lanitis serving as chairman.[1]

Recent developments

In 1990, Lanitis Development Ltd. was established to develop Aphrodite Hills, which was inaugurated in 2002.[1] The Limassol Marina project was initiated in 2008. In 2011, the Lanitis Green Energy Group (now Lanitis Energy Ltd.) was formed, and in 2012 the licence for the Limassol Greens Golf Resort was granted.[1] Construction of the Trilogy Seafront residential project began in 2018, followed by Limassol Greens in 2020. In 2022, the group acquired the Gloria Jean's Coffees chain in Cyprus and the Cremoso Gelato ice cream outlets.[1]

In 2005-2006, N.P. Lanitis Ltd. underwent a restructuring process, transforming from a trading company into a private equity investment company.[5]

Structure and subsidiaries

The Lanitis Group operates through Lanitis E.C. Holdings Ltd. as its holding company, with N.P. Lanitis Ltd. as its direct parent. The group's main subsidiaries and areas of operation include:[3][8] Cybarco Holdings Ltd., which focuses on construction and property development and is responsible for projects including Aphrodite Hills, Limassol Marina, and The Oval; Amathus Ltd., active in tourism, travel, hospitality, shipping, leisure, and entertainment, previously listed on the Cyprus Stock Exchange until 2022; N.P. Lanitis Ltd., a private equity investment company and the group's original trading entity; Lanitis Energy Ltd. / Conercon Energy Solutions, operating in renewable energy (photovoltaics) and gas distribution; Lanitis Farm Ltd., involved in agriculture and land management; and Lanitis Entertainment / Carob Mill Restaurants, running food and beverage venues in Limassol.

Social contribution

The group is known for its philanthropic activities, particularly through the Evagoras & Kathleen Lanitis Foundation, a non-profit organisation established in 2001 in memory of Evagoras and Kathleen Lanitis. The foundation organises and sponsors cultural and educational events across Cyprus.[7] The group also contributed to the construction and equipping of the Evagorion Palliative Care Centre, operated by the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society, and has funded archaeological works including at the ancient port of Amathus and the medieval manor of Kouklia.[9]
