Lannie Battistini (born 1958) is an American pianist, arranger, composer, songwriter and producer.
Early Life and education
Battistini was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, the son of Luis Battistini (now retired) chemist who was known as the General Manager and District Director for Bristol Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical in Puerto Rico. His mother, Rosalie Nastasi-Battistini, was born in New Jersey.[1]
Battistini grew up in the west coastal town of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico where his father was transferred to work at the Pharmaceutical’s district headquarters. After graduating high school from La Immaculada Concepcion Academy, he began his studies at the Interamericana University in the town of San German, Puerto Rico.
His love for music began at age 5 when his grandmother gifted him with a small piano[2]. He would hear songs on the radio, or from a record and make out the melodies on the piano exactly how it was heard. His mother began booking him for private parties and between 15-18 years old he was entertaining guests at Mayaguez Hilton Hotel.
Lannie Battistini studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts[3] and received a bachelor's degree in 1982[4] arranging and compositions, and a minor in film scoring with piano as his main instrument.
For the release of Moving On, his fourth studio album, Battistini and his Hands in Motion Productions and Marketing company worked with University of South Florida English students to develop, design and implement a brand for the artist.[5]
Through his recording studio, Battistini and his company work with artists in Florida.[6][7][8][9]
Career
After graduating from Berklee, Battistini moved to Miami, Florida in 1985. While in Miami he worked for ad agencies as a jingle writer and producer. Opening his own recording studio in 1985, he began producing music for other artists in LKB studio. From 1991-1993, Battistini worked as the music director at the Tropigala Club in Miami. During his time in Miami, he also spent 4 months working on projects with Elton John's lead bassist, Kenny Passarelli.
After Hurricane Andrew devastated Miami in 1994, Battistini moved back to Puerto Rico between 1995 and 2005 to continue his music career. It was there in 1998 that he founded Hands in Motion Music, his current recording studio[10]. When he returned permanently to the United States in 2005, he brought the recording studio with him.
While residing in Puerto Rico in 1999, Battistini went on tour with Olga Tañon, a three-time Grammy winner, two-time Latin Grammy winner, and three-time platinum recording artist. He toured with Olga until the mid-2000s, and recorded in her live album Olga Viva, Viva Olga at the House of Blues in Orlando, Florida[11]. This album won a Grammy award for Best Merengue Performance, and a Latin Grammy nomination. The record also went Platinum and ended on the top billboard charts for several weeks.
In 2000, after his tour with Tañon concluded, Battistini launched his solo career as a Latin jazz artist.
In 2005, Battistini moved to Tampa, Florida with his wife Neysa. With his wife as manager and publicist, they brought their recording studio with them and incorporated it in June of 2006.
He's been playing at local Florida venues with his jazz quintet.[12] In 2008 Battistini performed at an East Meets West Latin Jazz concert in Tampa, Florida.[13] He appears regularly in the Latin Times Magazine.[14]
In 2017, "Battistini & Hands In Motion" performed at the 27th annual Heineken Jazzfest in Puerto Rico.[15] Battistini performs regularly at venues in Florida and in Puerto Rico.[16][17]
Reception
Jazz Weekly described Battistini's 2019 Moving On album as "Music that slides down easy like a cool drink on a warm day."[18]
Personal Life
Battistini lives in Brandon, Florida with his wife Neysa Rodriguez-Battistini, who is also his business partner.[19]
