Pakistan and the former Kingdom of Laos formally began diplomatic relationship on the 15th of July in 1955. The English word Laotian, used interchangeably with Lao in most contexts, comes from French laotien/laotienne. The dominant ethnicity of Northeastern Thailand who descend from the Lao are differentiated from the Lao of Laos and by the Thais by the term Isan people or Thai Isan, a Sanskrit-derived term meaning northeast (Īśāna), but 'Lao' is still used.

While the the theory of the name being derived from ‘Lava’, the son of Rāma, is also there, but it's not universally accepted or proven.

Besides from Lahore (Lavapuri), there's an another city/province named after Lava, which is located in Thailand. It's called the Lopburi, and is the capital city of the province with the same name. It's also known as ‘Lavo’, which is also it's historical name. It was originally known as Lavo or Lavapura, meaning “city of Lava”. It was the capital of the regional Kingdom of Lavo.
