Larned State Hospital is a licensed psychiatric hospital that serves 51 counties in Central and Western Kansas. The Hospital provides mental health services to adults, adolescents and children, as well as an alcoholic treatment program. Larned State Security Hospital serves all of Kansas with a maximum security setting for offenders in need of psychiatric treatment or evaluation. The Security Hospital also treats non-forensic patients with gross behavioral problems who are transferred from other institutions. Larned State Hospital also provides a rehabilitation program to the older juvenile offenders ages 17-18 through a Youth Rehabilitation Unit for males for the entire state of Kansas. Finally, a Special Security Unit for dangerous mentally retarded was established in October 1977 to receive transfers from other facilities within the system who need treatment within a secure environment.<ref>Brier, Jack H.
