Lars Melander is a Swedish fine artist, graphic designer, art director and educator.[1][2][3]
His work has been featured in various exhibitions in North America and Europe primarily in the United States and Sweden.[4]
He has taught at Konstfack and Beckmans College of Design.[5]
Early life and education
Lars Melander was born in 1939 in Stockholm, Sweden.[6]
Melander was educated at Konstfack, graduating in 1962, majoring in graphic design and illustration.[7]
He also took an evening course at the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1965.[8]
Melander was a recipient of several scholarships, including from the Sandrew Foundation in 1960 and Reeves and Sons in 1962.[9]
Career
Shortly after graduating, Melander received a scholarship offer from Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, United States, where he subsequently worked.[10][11][12][13][14]
He later moved to New York City and joined Lippincott & Margulies working with clients such as American Airlines, Hudson Paper, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.[15][16][17][18] [19][20][21][22]
During the 1990s and early 2000s, he received several working scholarships from institutions including the Swedish Visual Arts Fund, the Swedish Illustrators Association, and a travel scholarship from the Society of Swedish Composers (FST) which enabled him to travel internationally.
Melander has illustrated books such as Vi ses på Baren by art historian Gösta Arvidsson, about the Opera Bar in Stockholm, and Berättelser från det gömda Sverige by Kari Molin.[23][24]
He produced commercial work for the Swedish postal service, including the illustration of postage stamps.
Melander also created set designs for television productions and appeared in the 1990 Swedish television series Modemaffian, which examined fashion, trends, and their cultural impact.
Melander has also been a member of jury at different exhibitions such as the Mini Print International of Cadaqués in Spain, Bonniers Konsthall in Sweden and Sotheby's globally.[25]
In 2004, a biography in Swedish was published about Melander's life and work, written by Gösta Arvidsson, Den rastlösa penseln with a foreword by Beate Sydhoff, former Permanent Secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.[26]
His artwork is showcased at the Nationalmuseum, Moderna Museet, National Library of Sweden, Landskrona Museum, the Swedish Arts Council as well as municipalities, county councils, and companies all over Sweden and private collections in the United States and Sweden.[27]
Melander is currently working on a book project, which is a selection from his 70 sketchbooks preserved for the National Library of Sweden.[28]
Personal life
He is a fan of Jazz music and is an active drummer.[29] He started as a professional drummer in the 1970s and has performed with many musicians. His band often performed at the Fasching club in Stockholm.
Melander currently lives in Bromma in Stockholm and has established his studio there.
