Lathipada is a village in the Nayagarh district of the Indian state of Odisha. It is located near the commercial hub of Itamati and is recognized for its significant contribution to the traditional folk arts of the region. The village is noted for preserving the ancient Odia martial art form, Paika Akhada.[1]

Geography

Lathipada is situated in the Nayagarh block of the Nayagarh district. It covers a geographical area of approximately 592 hectares.[2]

Demographics

According to the 2011 Census of India, Lathipada had a total population of 5,945, of which 3,153 were males and 2,792 were females. The village has a literacy rate that compares favorably with the district average, with a female literacy rate of approximately 76.54%.[2]

Culture

Lathipada is a prominent cultural hub in the Nayagarh district. It is officially listed by the district administration as a center for Paika Akhada (Warrior Gymnasium), a traditional martial art form associated with the Paika warrior caste of Odisha. The village is also known for Dholamahuri, a traditional folk music and dance form performed during religious festivals and processions.[1]

The preservation of these art forms in Lathipada is significant to the intangible cultural heritage of the Nayagarh region, which was historically a princely state with a strong military tradition.

Economy

The economy of Lathipada is primarily agrarian, with a significant portion of the population engaged in cultivation and agricultural labor. Due to its proximity to Itamati, a major trading center in the district, trade and small-scale commerce also contribute to the local economy.
