Laurel Kivuyo (born 2000) is a Tanzanian Environmental Activist and Sustainability advocate. She is an Environmental Health Science graduate from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. Laurel founded a youth-led non-governmental organization in 2018, Climate Hub Tanzania.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Laurel was born in the year 2000 and raised in the indigenous Maasai community that depends on nature for its livelihood through agriculture and animal husbandry.

She then joined the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences for her undergraduate in Environmental Health Science.

Climate Hub Tanzania[edit]

Witnessing the expansion of the city of Arusha that came about with an increase in waste production (60% ending up in landfills) opened up her mind to see waste as a potential treasure birthing the Waste to Treasure movement. She organized masterclasses and training sessions, teaching the community how to recycle waste into simple, environmentally friendly products like briquettes. She established Climate Hub Tanzania, that mobilizes young people to join the climate movement and actively participate in climate solutions, focusing on the campaign of Trash to Treasure. This has promoted youth employment in green initiatives throughout Arusha and Dar es Salaam. She majorly educates young people about the potential in discarded treasures, empowering them to create value from the waste that surrounds us. In a world facing waste and unemployment, Climate Hub's mission is to inspire sustainable solutions through environmental education and active participation in the climate movement.

Leadership Roles[edit]

Being an advocate for environmental conservation, Laurel was appointed as the Youth Environmental Ambassador by the Ministry of Environment of Tanzania for the period 2022/2025.[2]She is also a Youth Ambassador on Climate Change for the Southern African Youth Forum representing 16 countries in the period of 2022/2024. Laurel is also currently a SHE Changes Climate Ambassador

She has come up with climate projects including mass zero plastic advocacy in Tanzania, the innovation of sustainable eco-friendly products to counter plastic use, and managing hybrid and in-person educational campaigns that influence the community. She has also worked with the French Embassy, UNEP, and various national and international organizations in climate mitigation and adaptation
