History[edit]

The history of the Optimist Club of St. Louis begins in 1916 when a group of businessmen met to share contacts and encourage one another in difficult financial times. For almost a century, the Optimist Club of St. Louis has provided volunteer and financial support to make a positive difference in children’s lives. In the mid-1900’s, the club purchased a building and operated a boy’s club on the near north side.

Older than Optimist International itself:

1919 – The Founding of Optimist International[edit]

The association of Clubs that is known today as Optimist International was formed on June 19, 1919, when representatives of 11 clubs held a convention in Louisville, Kentucky, and adopted the name International Optimist Club. During the convention, William Henry Harrison, a descendent of the ninth president of the United States bearing the same name, was elected the first International President of Optimist international.

TRADITION[edit]

For over 106 years the Optimist Club of St. Louis has maintained a tradition of community service. The Optimist Club of St. Louis supports many local youth programs and organizations through financial and volunteer contributions.

LEADERSHIP[edit]

Over the years, the Optimist Club of St. Louis has been the home of many influential community leaders. Past Club Presidents include Cyrus Wilmore and H. B. Deal. St. Louis Cardinals general manager Branch Rickey was the Club’s President in 1928, just to name a few.

The Optimist Club of a part of Zone 9 in the East Missouri Optimist District.

The purpose of the East Missouri District The sole purpose of the District shall be to function as an administrative division of Optimist International in furtherance of the purposes of Optimist International. The District shall provide service and support to member Clubs for the purpose of enhancing growth, participation, administration and youth service.

The Optimist Club of St. Louis is affiliated with Optimist International which is composed of like clubs worldwide. Headquartered in St. Louis at 4494 Lindell Avenue, Optimist International promotes numerous programs through Optimist Clubs. Our club and the St. Louis community benefits from affiliation with Optimist International.
