Laurent Rieppi, born on (1980-10-14) 14 October 1980 (age 44) in Seraing, Belgium,[1] is a radio commentator, journalist, rock historian, author, professor,[2] and speaker from Belgium, specializing in rock music.

Biography[edit]

He was introduced to the world of rock music at a young age, influenced by his older brother Stéphane, who introduced him to Queen and Led Zeppelin.[3]

At thirteen, he began his radio career on a local free radio station.[1] By the age of fifteen or sixteen, he created the show Les Dinosaures with a friend, referencing the "dinosaurs of rock" like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and The Who.[4][5][3] These experiences helped him learn the fundamentals of radio production and hosting.[6]

Discovering the internet at a young age, he founded classic-rock.be[7] around the turn of the millennium, which helped him develop a rigorous approach to historical and documentary research in music.[3]

In 2003, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Communication from the Haute École de la Province de Liège. It was during this time he made his first steps at RTBF, interning on the show Les Classiques by Marc Ysaye on Radio 21. Today, he is an editorialist at Classic 21.[8]

Career[edit]

Radio and Media[edit]

Since Classic 21's inception on April 1st 2004,[9][10] Laurent Rieppi has been contributing to the Belgian French-speaking radio station Classic 21, where he writes, produces, and occasionally hosts shows dedicated to rock history.[8]

Through his analyses and anecdotes, he sheds light on iconic figures in music like Queen, David Bowie, or Lou Reed, while making complex musical concepts accessible and contextualizing them historically.

Although initially focused on the 1970s classic rock, his expertise now extends to rock and pop music from 1960 to today. His knowledge and numerous contacts in the music world have made him a reference for Belgian and French-speaking listeners.[11]

In 2008, he created the show Making-of, presented by Marc Ysaye, dedicated to the genesis of classic rock albums. This series played a key role in his radio career: in 2010, he and Marc Ysaye won the "Prix des Radios francophones" publiques for the "Best Editorialised Music Programme" in the "Short Format" for the segment on Blackbird by The Beatles.[12]

After hosting or co-hosting numerous shows, segments, and capsules over the radio seasons, Laurent Rieppi currently co-hosts on Classic 21:

  • Soundtrack: Broadcast on Sunday mornings, co-hosted with Laurent Debeuf, Dominique Ragheb, and Walter De Paduwa. It holds a central place in the station's program grid, offering a rock music news overview with the station's characteristic soundtrack.[13]
  • Rock & Roll Attitude: A daily morning capsule with Fanny Gillard, sharing a new rock anecdote each day set within its social context.[14]
  • Nobody Knows: A Monday evening capsule with Pierre Lorand, highlighting lesser-known facts about rock legends.[15]

While not having a regular television show, he occasionally comments on music news on La Une's news broadcast, the main television channel of RTBF.

Interviews[edit]

Laurent Rieppi has conducted many interviews with rock music icons throughout his career. His first notable interview was with Marianne Faithfull in 2005.

In 2011, he interviewed Patrick Chauvel, a war photographer and correspondent, discussing his memories of Jim Morrison, whom Chauvel met at the Rock'n'Roll Circus nightclub in Paris in 1971, shortly before Morrison's death. This interview placed Morrison within the cultural and artistic context of the time, emphasizing the significance of his music and lyrics.[16]

Among his most notable interviews in recent years are Iggy Pop (2019),[17] Nile Rodgers (2021),[18] and Tom Barman (2023).[19]

In 2023, Laurent Rieppi interviewed Mick Jagger, the singer and founding member of The Rolling Stones, for the release of the album Hackney Diamonds. During this interview, Jagger revealed insights into his vocal techniques and longevity, highlighting the importance of exercise and luck in his career.[20]

Professor[edit]

Since 2021, Laurent Rieppi has been a professor of Music Culture at the Haute École Albert Jacquard (HEAJ), where he teaches the course History of Modern Music, exploring the roots and evolution of musical trends with a focus on the cultural impact of rock music.[21]

Speaker[edit]

In addition to his media work, Laurent Rieppi delivers lectures on rock history and its cultural impact. He also organizes or collaborates on commentated listening sessions for classic rock albums, introduces tribute band concerts, and hosts interactive music events like blind tests and quizzes.[22][23][24][25][26][27]
