Laverne Greene-Leech accepts medal of excellence-- one of three of the first African-American students at Mississippi State College for Women

Laverne Greene-Leech (June 25, 1948- ), is a civil rights pioneer, and one of three African-American students who desegregated Mississippi State College for Women, now Mississippi University for Women (MUW), in 1966, in Columbus, Mississippi.[20] [1] She, along with Barbara Turner Bankhead and Diane Hardy were the first black students enrolled at the college.[2] Greene-Leech entered the Mississippi State College for Women in 1966 as a freshman and had been a graduate of Hunt High School.[3] Greene-Leech and the other two women were accepted to the college, but were not allowed to live on campus.[3]

After being followed home by a strange man who sprayed her with water, Greene-Leech decided not to continue at the college and she moved onto another university.[3]

Her story is captured in the Those Who Dared anthology, and the Mississippi University for Women pioneers website, which includes photos and oral history accounts.

Laverne is now a curator of the R.E. Hunt Museum and Culture Center in Columbus, Mississippi.[4] In 2016, MUW awarded Green-Leech the university's Medal of Excellence.[5]
