Lawrence F. Jindra

Lawrence F. Jindra, M.D. is an American ophthalmologist[1] and Chief Emeritus at Winthrop-University Hospital;[2][3] an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Columbia University,[4] Founder and Director Emeritus of the Glaucoma Consultation Unit at the Northport Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, and Founder of Floral Park Ophthalmology, P.C.; a former White House Fellow,[5] retired US Marine Corps Reserve Surgeon and inventor and holder of a US Patent for early diagnosis of glaucoma.[6]

His clinical sub-specialty is glaucoma, where over three decades, he was a thought leader in the clinical implementation of: selective laser trabeculoplasty,[7][8] non-perforating trabeculectomy, psychophysics and visual electrophysiology, and topographic evaluation of the optic nerve and retinal nerve fiber layer.[9]

Education and Career[edit]

Jindra was graduated from university Summa cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a concentration in Physics and from medical school with Distinction in Research with a thesis on The Visual Evoked Potential: Differential Filtration of Intermodulation Components in 1983. He served as an Interne at North Shore Hospital of Cornell University Medical College and then completed his ophthalmology residency, as Chief Resident, at the Edward S. Harkness Institute of Ophthalmology at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1987. He completed a Heed Fellowship in Postgraduate Ophthalmology at the Laboratory of Biophysics at Rockefeller University in 1988 and completed a Fellowship at the Goldberg Glaucoma Service of Wills Eye Hospital in 1989.

Jindra was appointed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science at the US Agency for International Development of the US Department of State in 1991 and by the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships, serving in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy under Presidents Bush and Clinton from 1992 to 1993.

He earned a Master of Public Administration with concentration in Medicine, Science, and Technology at the School of Government of Harvard University in 1991 and obtained a Master of Science in Management with thesis on The Physician in Health Care Reform at Pembroke College of the University of Oxford in 1994.

Jindra has reviewed for several professional journals, authored over 100 refereed articles and abstracts in international medical and scientific journals, and written a book chapter in the Duane Series of Ophthalmology. He has recently authored and published a novel, American Hero,[10] recounting the story of his father’s participation in the D-day Invasion of Europe during World War II.

Jindra has been invited to speak at numerous international professional and scientific conferences and has performed live surgery throughout the world. Earlier in his career he completed several post-residency fellowships in four countries, including the Max Planck Institute, Lions Eye Institute, Pasteur Institute and the University of Cambridge.[11]

Jindra is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology; he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.[12]
