Tanuj Banker, is a board certified ophthalmologist and fellowship trained vitreoretinal surgeon.[1][2][3] He currently serves as a retinal surgeon at the Center for Sight, Sarasota, Florida. His clinical practice focuses on macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, along with ocular oncology and uveitis. Surgically, he specializes in macular hole surgery, retinal detachment repair, and epiretinal membranes. His areas of research include novel treatments for macular degeneration, ocular trauma,[4] and retinal detachments.[5] He has authored a number of publications and presented research at over thirty national and international academic conferences and is an investigator in several clinical trials.
Early life and education[edit]
Tanuj Banker M.D. is a native of Houston, Texas. He attended Kinkaid High School. Banker graduated as the Valedictorian, Magna Cum Laude, from Georgetown University, where he completed his undergraduate degree. He was accepted early into medical school and attained his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, graduating Cum Laude. Banker remained at Georgetown to complete his residency in Ophthalmology and was selected to serve as the Chief Resident of the Ophthalmology Residency program at Georgetown University Hospital. While at Georgetown University Hospital, Banker was a multi-year recipient of the “Patient Care Award,” an honor he was nominated for by patients and hospital staff members for excellence in patient care. He also served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Georgetown University Journal of Health Science.
Banker completed his Surgical Retina Fellowship[6] at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida, the number-one ranked eye hospital in the United States. During his fellowship, he trained with the world renowned ocular oncologist, J. William Harbour M.D. While at Bascom Palmer, Banker performed extensive research on topics including retinal detachments and ocular trauma. He also received training in placement of glued intraocular lens under Dr. Amar Agarwal at the Agarwal Eye Hospital.
Clinical accomplishments[edit]
Banker is fellowship trained in surgical retina and ocular oncology, and he has treated thousands of patients with macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and other retinal diseases. He currently sees patients at the Center for Sight in five clinical sites in Sarasota and Charlotte Counties. Banker is active in educating eye doctors on advances in the management of retinal diseases.[7]
