Early life and education
Nguyen was born and raised in the Central Vietnamese province of Quang Ngai, where he gained local prominence for representing the province at regional and national academic olympiads. He was named the Province's Valedictorian in 2016 and received a Certificate of Merit from the Governor of Quang Ngai Province in 2017.[11]
He later moved to a boarding school in Boston, Massachusetts, under a full-ride merit scholarship.[12] He became viral and was dubbed an eomchina by the Vietnamese national press and social media for earning acceptance and scholarships from 21 universities.[13][14]
Nguyen enrolled at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, where he served as Section Editor of the Georgetown Journal of International Affairs and became a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, Phi Beta Kappa, and Omicron Delta Epsilon. Nguyen graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in international economics and an M.S. in foreign service, both from Georgetown, where he was also a Centennial Fellow and a Doyle Global Dialogue Fellow.
Career
His research on developmental economic and social policies, including a peer-reviewed paper on the Universal Basic Income (UBI),[15] was highly commended by the Royal Economic Society[10][16] and cited in a major study to examine the possibility of launching a UBI experiment in Scotland by the UK's National Health Service.[17] One of his early papers in high school was also used as a backgrounder for a national debate championship in the UK.
He also contributes op-eds to various international publications such as Newsweek and The National Interest. His recent article on the limitation of carbon offsets was published on USA Today[7] and cited by leading environmentalists in the lead-up to COP26.[18] Nguyen's research on the COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Vietnam appeared in The Diplomat[8] and was cited by Fortune and the Central European Institute of Asian Studies, as well as a Springer handbook.[19]
He has delivered keynotes at TEDxYouth and spoken at the United Nations General Assembly. He has been featured by various Vietnamese national news outlets, including Voice of Vietnam (VOV),[20] Vietnam Television Corp (VTC),[21] VnExpress,[14] Dân Trí,[13] Zing News,[22] Nhan Dan,[23] and Vietnamnet,[24] among others.
Campaign for economics education
Main article: Global Association of Economics Education (GAEE)
Nguyen founded the Global Association of Economics Education (GAEE) in 2017[25] to democratize access to economics education and financial literacy in the Global South. Under his leadership, GAEE has expanded to over ten countries[26][27] and won the "Educational Nonprofit of the Year" award by Acquisition International in 2020. Its campaign in Asia was recognized as an SDG Action by the United Nations,[28][29][30] and GAEE has partnered with organizations like AIESEC,[1] and the World Economics Association.[31][32] It has also been recognized by the American Economic Association (AEA) and the European Commission.[33][34] For his leadership of GAEE, was dubbed the "17-year-old democratizer of economics education" by Yahoo Finance[35] and was nominated for Vietnam's WeChoice Award in 2023.
Personal life
Nguyen is a hobbyist software developer, having authored a highly acclaimed sound system for Android devices on the XDA-Developers Forum.[36] He also owned a YouTube Channel with over 20 million views that specialized in mobile user experience and conceptual designs but has been inactive since 2018.[37] He is a self-described amateur pianist and has published a piano EP on Spotify.[38]
Nguyen was self-described as an "international relations nerd" and a "biggest fan" of Model United Nations conferences in high school and was named an "Outstanding Delegate" by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).[39] He twice chaired the Danang Youth Model United Nations (DYMUN), one of Vietnam's first and largest MUN conferences.[40]
