Leander Vyvey (born December 21, 1989, in Ghent, Belgium) is a Belgian actor and former professional kitesurfer. Vyvey began his kitesurfing career in 2002 in Nieuwpoort.

He won international competitions in the freestyle discipline and is known for his explosive and daring skills in kiteboarding. Since 2017, he has played various roles in theatre plays, movies and television series. Leander is particularly known for his acting role as Lukas in the German-British series 'Then You Run'[1]

Early life and career[edit]

Vyvey was born on December 21 in Ghent, Belgium. He began practicing kitesurfing in 2002 in Nieuwpoort, Belgium. He was brought up by the sea and got introduced to water sports such as sailing and windsurfing at a young age. Although he never planned on becoming a professional kitesurfer, he began participating in local competitions and quickly rose in the rankings. Vyvey was a four-time Belgian champion in multiple disciplines, and was the runner-up in the Kiteboard Pro World Tour in 2008 and 2009. He won several medals in world championships won gold at the world championship at Lake Como, Italy in 2008.

Leander had several kitesurfing accidents, in 2007 he crashed in Big Bay, South Africa where he got hospitalised. In 2009 he crashed out in the ocean when training in Maui, Hawaii. He managed to get back to the shore after struggling for hours with a dislocated shoulder. In 2012 Leander was found unconscious after landed on the beach, injuring his neck.

After his career as a professional kitesurfer kitesurfing, leander started to work as an actor. He first studied in Madrid and later did a post-graduate at Drama Studio in London. He then briefly moved to Chicago to study at The Second City. Leander made his acting debut in 2016 in the movie 'Rescue Under Fire'. Since then, he has had various roles in theatre plays, movies and television series, including 'FBI: International', 'Then You Run', and 'The Last Front'.[2]

Personal life and public image[edit]

Leander is known for his eccentric personality and is often praised for his commitment to the sport and his role as an ambassador for kitesurfing in Belgium. He is fluent in English, Dutch, French, Spanish and German. Leander is also involved in various charitable initiatives and has collaborated with organisations dedicated to the protection of the oceans.[3][4]

Leander has received several awards and nominations for his achievements as a kitesurfer, including being a four-time Belgian champion, runner-up in the Kiteboard Pro World Tour, and athlete of the year (Nieuwpoort)[6][7][8][9][10][11].
