Leathes Prior is a law firm based in Norwich, England. Founded in 1876, the firm operates from two offices in the city centre. The 14 partners and 60 staff are divided into teams providing advice on matters of law such as family, employment, corporate, commercial, dispute resolution, mediation, wills, trusts, conveyancing and intellectual property. Clients range from individuals to larger businesses, both locally and internationally.

History[edit]

Mr Leathes Prior was admitted as a solicitor in 1875. He established the firm in his own name and began representing private clients in Norfolk as well as taking up public appointments for the city of Norwich and the diocese.

In 1876, Leathes married Cecilia Bolingbroke. They had six children including two sons Bernard Leathes Prior and Charles Bolingbroke Leathes Prior who qualified as solicitors after being articled to their father.

Charles subsequently bought the Dereham firm of Girling and Ransome before rejoining his father briefly in the 1920s before being appointed Official Receiver and later chairman of tea and tobacco merchants.

Bernard practiced in London but was recalled to support the family firm in 1927 when the burden of business finally became too much for his father, Leathes, who died in 1936, aged 83.

The following generation of Leathes Priors ensued with Bernard Oliver who was admitted as a solicitor in 1937 before taking up military service in World War II. Bernard Senior, who had preserved the business through the war years remained active in the practice until his death in 1953 at the age of 77.

Bernard Oliver took up several public appointments in Norwich including in 1949 becoming Clerk of the Peace, in 1953 HM Coroner and Clerk to the Great Hospital Trustees and in 1955 Registrar to Diocese of Norwich and Legal Secretary to the Bishop.

The combination of official appointments and private client work sustained the firm into the 1960s. However there were no other members of the Leathes Prior family to continue the tradition so unrelated solicitors had to be recruited.
