Lee A. Van Arsdale is a former American business executive and U.S. Army officer. Van Arsdale served in Delta Force for most of his military career, including leading Delta forces in the Battle of Mogadishu which was subsequently portrayed in Black Hawk Down (film). Following his military career, Van Arsdale was the founding director of University of Nevada, Las Vegas's Institute for Security Studies. Between 2006 and 2009 he was CEO of Triple Canopy, Inc. that provided troops for the Iraq War.

Early life and military career[edit]

Van Arsdale graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the United States Military Academy (West Point) in 1974.[1]

Van Arsdale served 25 years in the Army, 11 of which in the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta special operations counter-terrorist unit, known as Delta Force. Van Arsdale eventually rose to the position of Sabre squadron commander in the unit.[1]

In 1993 he was deployed to Somalia in 1993 as part of Operation Gothic Serpent, where he was in charge of the operations center during the Battle of Mogadishu. At the conclusion of the battle, Van Arsdale led a rescue operation to extract beleaguered Army Rangers and Delta Force operators in what became known as the Mogadishu Mile.[2][3] Van Arsdale was decorated with the Silver Star and Purple Heart.[4]

For the last two years of his Army service, Van Arsdale was assigned to The Pentagon as the Counterterrorism/Special Projects Branch Chief in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.[5] Van Arsdale retired from the Army in 1999 at the rank of colonel.[1]

Black Hawk Down[edit]

Following his discharge from the military, Van Arsdale worked as a technical adviser for the production of Black Hawk Down (film), a popular portrayal of the Battle of Mogadishu.[6]

UNLV Institute for Security Studies[edit]

In 2003, Van Arsdale was the founding director of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas's Institute for Security Studies.[7][5]

Triple Canopy[edit]

Van Arsdale joined Triple Canopy, Inc. in 2005, and served as CEO from 2006 to 2009, providing troops for the Coalition Provisional Authority and other functions in the Iraq War.[1][8][not in citation given][9][10][11]
