Major Leetul Gogoi is an officer of the Indian Army who was involved in the 2017 Kashmir human shield row.[1]
Early life and education[edit]
Gogoi was born in 1979 at Namrup, which is located 80km from Dibrugrah, Assam. His father, Dharmeswar Gogoi, worked in the production department of Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation. He studied in Dibrugrah and Shillong and later graduated from Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.[2][3]
Career[edit]
Gogoi joined the Indian Army at the age of 18 as a soldier and served in 3rd battalion of the Assam Regiment for 9 years. He later joined the Army Cadet College (ACC), Dehradun and was commissioned as a lieutenant in December 2008 in the Army Service Corps. He volunteered for the stint in the 53 Rashtriya Rifles and was posted for counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir.[2][3] In 2017, he was awarded the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) commendation for his sustained efforts in counter-insurgency operations.[1]
Kashmir human shield row[edit]
Gogoi came into the limelight after a video surfaced depicting a Kashimiri man tied to an army vehicle during the Srinagar Lok Sabha by-election on 9 April 2017. This incident took place in the Budgam district.[3] He justified his actions by saying – "I saved lives without firing a bullet or beating anyone. I have done no wrong. I was true to my duty, I was not afraid. Stones were pelted from all sides but we ensured smooth conduct of by-polls."[4][5]
There were mixed reactions to this row. He was praised by Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla and BJP President Amit Shah for his actions which saved lives of protesters, soldiers and election officials.[6][7] This incident was criticized by Lieutenant General Harcharanjit Singh Panag who said hostage-taking and human shields are a violation of the protocols of the army.[8][9]
