Leeya Rose Jackson is an illustrator, art director, and podcast host living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. [1]

Early life and education[edit]

Originally from Detroit, Jackson received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a double major in painting and printmaking from Illinois Wesleyan University in 2013.[2] She spent one semester studying in Florence, Italy during her time at IWU. [3] She attended Miami Ad School for one year. [2]

Career[edit]

Art directing[edit]

Jackson worked as an intern at ad agencies to built her portfolio before accepting a position as Art Director at Minneapolis-based ad agency Fallon.[2] She designed a mural as well as pins and other merchandise for Coven, a co-working space in Minneapolis. [4][5] She was the Art Director for an ad campaign for US Bank in 2020.[6]

Jackson was scheduled to teach a workshop as part of a Third Thursday event at The Minneapolis Institute of Arts in 2020. The event featuring women and femme-identifying designers and business owners, was cancelled due to COVID-19.[4]

Podcasting[edit]

Jackson co-hosts a podcast called Borrowed Interest alongside Amalia Nicholson and Shareina Chandler, two other Black women in the Minneapolis advertising industry.[7] The podcast, started in 2017, dives into the advertising field from the perspective of three Black women. Borrowed Interest won Best Podcast in Minneapolis's City Pages Best of MN in 2018. [8][2]

Social practice[edit]

In 2020, Jackson and Safrat Shonibare started an initiative called Four Our Magic. Inspired by Black Girl Magic, the program provides self-care and beauty experiences to Black and Indigenous People of Color. [9]
