Conceived as a trilogy, the first part was published in 2008 after four long years of hard work and it narrated a fable in which a black cat, in the middle of the night, shared its secret to a gravedigger in a cemetery of Baltimore: the animal harboured the wandering spirit of Edgar Allan Poe. The American writer had made a pact with the devil with which he was endowed with genius and glory in exchange for eternal torment.
There begins a comprehensive review of the writer’s tormented life and some of his works: the death of his parents when he was a kid; the tense relationship with his uncle John Allan, from whom he would take his surname and who would be his mentor in his childhood despite being against his writing obsession; his time in the army; his tragic love with his cousin Virginia, who died from tuberculosis at an early age; his vision about religion; his death… In the album, there are also some references to Poe’s literary works, such as ‘'The Raven o ‘'The Pit and the Pendulum.
In the first part of the saga, more than 50 musicians of the most important Spanish rock bands took part: Mägo de Oz, WarCry, Saratoga, Stravaganzza, Dark Moor, Lujuria, Barón Rojo, Obús, among others. The leading role of Poe was performed by Leo Jiménez. Moreover, this album is characterised by the return to the scene of Tony Solo, singer of Sangre Azul, who had been separated from music for 15 years, and the fact that it is the album where Fernando García, singer of Victory, sang in Spanish for the first time, in addition to bringing together an incredible cast of musicians.
The lyrics are endowed with certain rigour because all the data that they contain were approved by The Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore, which provided a large amount of material to document the rock opera. However, although the lyrics mention real facts, the work has a fictional purpose and many aspects were adapted freely, with the reincarnation of Poe being the most obvious invention.

Four years later, Joaquín Padilla resumes the project in order to continue with the saga. The story narrated in this second part of Legado de una Tragedia continues where the first part ended: with the author’s death. His wandering spirit takes him on a dramatic journey in which he will visit the nine circles of Hell, as Dante Alighieri did in ‘'Divine Comedy, with the aim to meet Satan and try to break the pact that condemns him to wander in pain for the rest of eternity. As in the Divine Comedy, Poe is guided in his odyssey by the poet Virgilio, making the same journey that Dante made through nine circles, where punished spirits locked in their sins are housed (gluttony, lust, greed, anger…).
In his gloomy journey, he will meet mythological gods, monsters, the Styx, la ciudad del mal (Dite) the city of Dis and, above all, the damned souls of other historical figures who made a similar pact with the devil, whose earthly lives had parallels with Poe's and now suffer a wicked punishment. Thus, he will meet, among others, Marqués de Sade, Elizabeth Bathory, the Assyrian queen Semíramis or even Dante himself, until his final encounter with Lucifer… who, after a violent confrontation, doesn’t accept Poe’s requests and keeps the pact of torment. Dejected and hopeless, Poe asks for his death as his only chance to reach freedom and redemption, until Sandman (Morpheus), the son of Sleep, appears and welcomes him under his mantle, fighting against the archangel of the abyss Abadón (the guardian of Poe) and takes him away from Hell towards his oneiric kingdom, the place where the third and last part of the trilogy takes place.
The album is much harder and darker than its predecessor, with a more careful production and with a greater presence of the symphonic orchestra. The cover of the album was made by Felipe Machado, who has collaborated with Blind Guardian and Rhapsody of Fire. The album was released in different formats. The deluxe edition included a DVD with the making-of of the album. The reception by the general public and the press was impressive, turning Legado de una Tragedia into a consolidated project.

On November 7, 2016, the last part of the trilogy based on Edgar Allan Poe was published. Poe’s journey continues in the world of dreams, where Lucien, Morpheus and Destiny welcome the writer. Morpheus reminds Poe that he had already been in his kingdom before as the ideas he used for his stories come from there, while Destiny warns him that he would confront his own creations and that the Endless will walk with him in the last part of his journey.
During his journey, Poe meets characters of his invention like Mr. Valdemar, Mr. Usher, Pluto or the devil of the belfry, among others, who claim from the author that one thing that most of them share is the cruelty with which he treated them in his stories. Finally, Poe is liberated from his pact with the devil through the love of Virginia, his long-deceased wife.
“Legado de una Tragedia III” was recorded with the collaboration of a real symphonic orchestra, named Orquesta del Trágico Legado, conducted by the maestro Txema Cariñena. Moreover, it featured a large lyrical choir, called Coral del Trágico Legado, which would take part in the future albums. It was the perfect culmination for this unprecedented epic trilogy which dazzled press and general public alike. The marvelous cover was made by Felipe Machado once again. The album was accompanied by an extensive DVD that showed the album’s making-of, a very interesting documentary directed and created by Oscar Fernández. It showed the whole creative process, the rehearsals, the recording… with interviews to many of the protagonists.

On February 28, 2019, the fourth part of the rock opera by Joaquín Padilla was published. This time, the author leaves the Edgar Allan Poe’s theme behind in order to explore the world of medieval intrigues and the secrets of the Order of the Knights Templar. The plot reviews the history of the Order since its creation in 1119 by Hugues de Payens and narrates the discovery in the ancient temple of Solomon in Jerusalem of a relic capable of questioning the foundations of the Catholic Church itself, which would revolutionise the vision about religion that was held at that time. But the relic is incomplete. The Templars set out to search for the remains of this relic while the Holy See tries to buy time providing them with all sorts of concessions that provoke its rapid growth, turning it into the most powerful European order. Finally, the Templars will be the victims of a conspiracy between Philip IV, the French king, and the Pope Clement V, who would finish with the Order but not with its secret. This time, the leading role will be interpreted by Joaquín Padilla himself, who impersonates Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Order. The album featured renowned international artist like Thomas Vickstrom (Therion), who sang in Spanish for the first time, or Baol Bardot Bulsara (TNT), as well as a select group of national musicians like José Andrea (Uróboros), who made his debut in the project after being claimed by the audience for years. He sang the first single of the album, “El cruzado”. The album also featured already usual singers like Tete Novoa (Saratoga), Isra Ramos (Avalanch), Jorge Berceo (Zenobia) and a long etcetera. For the first time, female guttural voices were introduced, by Diva Satánica (Nervosa, Bloodhunter) and Sara Benito (Hiranya). Moreover, it meant the return of Tony Solo (Sangre Azul) to the project, who had already participated in the first part of the saga. The cover was done by the Portuguese Gustavo Sazes, who has worked with bands like Kamelot, Epica or Arch Enemy and who created one of the best covers to date, in which a knight appears covered in blood, with hands in prayer position, in front of the cathedral of Notre Dame. It is the darkest cover of the saga, with a lot of details full with symbolism.
2020: Legado de una tragedia "V": BRITANIA
Britania is the fifth instalment of Legado de una Tragedia, an EP that narrates the conquest of Britain by the Roman legions commanded by the emperor Claudius and the fierce fight that this emperor held with the Celtic chieftain Caratacus and the druids. It is an epic tale of death, ancient rites, blood and treachery. This time, it is a completely symphonic work, recorded exclusively with a symphonic orchestra, a lyrical choir and several rock singers. Joaquín, the author, has announced that it will include two versions, for the first time: one sung in Spanish by native musicians as usual, and another one sung in English and performed by singers from international bands, bringing together an impressive cast. The participation of Johnny Gioeli (Hardline, Axel Rudi Pell), David Readman (Pink Cream 69, Adagio), Thomas Vikstrom (Therion), Rosalía Sairem (Therion), Baol Bardot Bulsara (TNT), Isra Ramos (Avalanch), Tete Novoa (Saratoga), Chus Herranz (Entrelazados) and Joaquín himself is confirmed. The first single, “Britannia”, was released on 8 December and the album is scheduled to be released on 29 January, 2021. Once again, the cover has been made by Gustavo Sazes (Kamelot, Epica, Arch Enemy…).
