Legal Aid Defence Counsel System was introduced by National Legal Service Authority (NALSA) in India involving full time engagement of lawyers for engaging in legal aid in criminal matters in similar lines to public defender system.

Objective

Legal Aid Defence Counsel System is planned to be introduced in all the districts of India by NALSA for the poor and marginalised, [1][2][3] who cannot afford to pay for the legal services.[4] The system is designed to provide the needy people booked under criminal law with quality legal aid.[5][6]

Presence

Legal Aid Defence Counsel System are presently available in 611 districts.[7]

Committee

Legal Aid Defence Counsel System consists of Chief Legal Aid Counsel, Deputy Chief Legal Counsel,Four Assistant Legal Aid Counsels, and ministerial staff members.[8]
